Episode 21 – To Send Love

“Hey Sendai, so no lunch box today?”

“Come to think of it, there wasn’t one this morning. Maybe it was just a whim.”

I was reminded of the lunch box when Kaneko told me during recess.

It’s not so brazen as to rely on a bento box that I don’t know who brought it to me and for what purpose, but it does make me feel a little uneasy when it stops without any warning.

I also wonder if something happened to the person who made the lunch box.

Or is it because I didn’t come to thank her even though she had made me a lunch box?

No, I don’t know who it was, so there’s no way I could tell her, and I even included a letter with it, so I guess that’s not true.

But who was it in the end?

I really wonder if it was just a prank, not my fan or stalker.

I wonder if she was mocking me when she saw how happy I was to receive my lunch box.

……No, if so, what was that for?

I don’t think I did anything to make people resent me that much.

“Well, maybe today’s the day to go to the school cafeteria, right?”

“I guess so. But, Kaneko, don’t you have to eat with Takaya san?”

“I like girls, but I like hanging out with my friend just as much. And I think it’s easier to be with guys.”

“I’m glad you said that. Then, about lunch…..hm?”

“What’s with all the noise?”

While I was talking with Kaneko, there was a strange noise outside the classroom.

We looked toward the corridor in wonderment.

There was a woman standing alone at the entrance to the front of the classroom, and all the attention of the class was focused on her.

“Hyori senpai……?”

“Hey, hey, that’s Hyori senpai. Why is that person in our class?”

As usual, she remains expressionless, looking straight ahead, holding something like a large box in front of her body.

And slowly, slowly, as if she was fearfully advancing on unstable scaffolding, she slowly entered the classroom.

She comes toward us……?

“Tokiwa kun.”

With a clear voice, she called my name.

At that moment, the buzz of my classmates increased.

I, too, didn’t think I would be called, and remained frozen.

Then she came up to me and offered me the box she was holding.

“Here, this is your lunch box.”

“Today’s lunch box. I didn’t know when to give it to you.”

“……For me?”

The next seat, Kaneko, also froze with his mouth hanging open.

At that moment, Senpai whispered, [Auntie asked me to take care of it for her.]

“A-ah, my mother left it with you? Erm, I’m kind of sorry.”

“……Will you eat it properly?”

“O-of course. Erm, thank you for coming all the way out here.”

“Yeah. See you later.”

Senpai handed me my lunch box and quickly left the classroom.

Everyone watched with bated breath as she walked out without paying attention to the murmurs and stares of those around her.

After Senpai disappeared, it was like a festival.

“Hey, that’s Hyori senpai, the second year student, right?”

“Yeah, she’s so beautiful. And she smelled so good.”

“But, I thought that senior hated guys, right? Why would she give lunch to a boy in our class……?”

“Are they dating by any chance? What’s his relationship with Hyori senpai?”

The boys started to surround me all at once.

But I didn’t know what to say or how to explain, so I looked at Kaneko and asked for help.

However, it was Kaneko who seemed to be the most surprised of all, and my help sign didn’t reach him, as he remained silent with his mouth open the whole time.

As I was struggling with being mangled, a chime finally rang, indicating that a helping hand was being extended.

“I didn’t think Sendai was having that kind of relationship with Hyori senpai.”

“I told you it’s not like that.”

lunch break.

Kaneko and I are currently eating on the rooftop.

I didn’t go to the school cafeteria.

Kaneko buys bread and hangs out with me.

“I’ve heard that she hates men. But I guess she’s got the guts, delivering lunch to you even if it’s just to run an errand?”

“Of course not. My mother is a brazen woman, so she left my lunch with her and she couldn’t refuse because she’s a nice person.”

“Hmmm. But, even if that’s the case today, what about yesterday’s or the day before yesterday’s lunch box? It’s the same lunch box, right? If that’s the case, then it must have been Senpai.”

“That was my mother’s work, too. I don’t know much about Senpai and my mother, but they seem to be good friends, so she has been leaving them to Senpai each time.”

“Then why did she come to the classroom today?”

“That was……well, I guess she felt bad about leaving the lunch box in the shoe box all the time.”

The same white lunch box as yesterday was once again decorated with hearts made of salmon flakes.

I knew it was my mother’s. Did something happen at work?

She would never have done such an embarrassing thing before.

I’ve never even asked her to make me a lunch box in the first place.

“But the whole class is talking about how you and Senpai are having a relationship. It’s great, isn’t it, to be gossiped with such a beautiful woman?”

“What’s the point of being gossiped about?”

“Come to think of it, what did you want to talk to me about during lunch break? I don’t think so, but is it about Hyori senpai?

“……No, that’s about enough.”

I’ve become the center of attention of my classmates because of one incident during recess.

I explained to Kaneko exactly what happened, but he was still skeptical.

I can tell that he thinks that we are actually dating, or even if we are not, he thinks that I’m targeting her.

I don’t want to complicate things by talking about Senpai any further.

“Kaneko, for the time being, let me tell you that there is nothing going on between me and Senpai.”

“Yeah, yeah, let’s put it that way. But well, be prepared to be teased by your classmates for a few days.”

“Haa…..I didn’t want to stand out like this.”

After finishing lunch, it was a bit depressing to go back to the classroom.

We’re all at an age where we’re curious about other people’s love stories, and we know that since it’s the other person, there are probably so many things we want to hear all the more.

Sure enough, as soon as I got back to class, my classmates started asking me about my relationship with Hyori senpai.

Of course, there was nothing I could answer, so I tried to fool them, but it didn’t work.

It makes me realize just how much of a scoop it is when a senior who is reputed to be the most beautiful girl in the school comes into a junior’s classroom and hands a lunch box to a specific boy.

After this, my classmates were talking about me and Senpai all the time until after school.

After school, I left the classroom as if to escape.
