It was already past 5:30 on the way home from Tropical Waterland.
The train was rumbling….and I was being rocked by a train with few people on it.
I parted with my seniors on the previous stop, and now it was just me and Hanabi.
It seems that I had drowned in the pool and passed out, so I had to go to the facility’s infirmary to get checked out and rest a bit before going home.
I guess we were supposed to have dinner out together and then split up, but I felt bad that I had taken the time away from Hanabi and the others.
The seniors were worried about me, but I’m filled with bitterness.
Sigh……I let out a deep sigh and turned my attention to the Hanabi sitting next to me.
“……Sorry I ruined what could have been a great pool day for you.”
I said, and Hanabi looked back at me in dismay.
“I told you earlier that no one cared.”
“Yeah, but……. Originally it was supposed to be the four of you without me, but I felt bad for interrupting the time of the four of you and causing this to happen.”
I heard earlier that everyone would be busy from next week, so maybe it was the only chance for the four members of the student council to get together during the summer vacation.
I was looking down, and Hanabi lightly coughed.
“……You’re thinking too much. I don’t think I want to play without Asahi, and I’m sure everyone else did, too. Besides, you jumped into the pool to save the kids, right? I think that’s very admirable.”
No…… When you say words like that to me now, I can’t help but feel a surge of emotion.
As I hold my eyes with my fingers and try desperately to hold back the tears, Hanabi asks.
“More importantly, are you feeling better already?”
“…..Yeah, I’m fine.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
It had been a long time since I had talked to Hanabi like this.
It was like when you catch a cold and your mother is nicer to you than usual.
We were riding the train in silence for a while.
Then I suddenly remembered something and asked Hanabi.
“Speaking of which, do you know what kind of people the people who helped me were?”
According to the doctor in the infirmary…..when I drowned, the people around me saved me.
I wanted to thank them somehow, but because I was unconscious at the time, I didn’t know what kind of people they were who saved me.
“…………”
“H-Hanabi……?”
Then, Hanabi stared into my face and fell silent.
Since her gaze was slightly lowered, she seemed to be staring at my mouth, and when I wiped my mouth thinking that there was something attached to it, Hanabi suddenly averted her face.
“……I thanked the person who helped you, so it’s okay.”
“I see. Thanks for everything.”
“It’s not like you have to worry about it, just rest now.”
After saying that, Hanabi suddenly moved away.
The evening sun was shining through the window of the train, and perhaps because of this, Hanabi’s face had a hint of blush on it.
Then she turns her head in the other way, and the conversation is cut short.
She was probably tired, but I remembered that I had forgotten to say something important and called out to Hanabi.
“Oh, come to think of it, I still haven’t been able to say thank you, Hanabi.”
“…..I just heard about it now, though?”
“No, not that. Thanks for saving my life at that time.”
“Eh?”
“Because Hanabi gave me CPR—”
“Wait a minute. You were unconscious at the time……”
“No, the doctor in the infirmary said I was saved because Hanabi gave me CPR as soon as she could.”
As soon as I said that, Hanabi’s face turned bright red.
Then she turned over to cover her face with her hands and a loud sigh could be heard.
“…..It’s just a medical procedure.”
“Hmm?”
“Like I said, I just did CPR because it was an unavoidable situation, and there was no other reason. I didn’t even have time to think about that. Well, if it had not been Asahi, I might have hesitated a little, but I think other people would have taken the same action. In other words, don’t misunderstand…!”
Hanabi said in a fast-talking manner.
I chuckled and scratched my cheek.
“Well, I don’t know, but…..thanks anyway. Thanks for the help, Hanabi.”
“………..Yeah.”
The sound of the train drowned out Hanabi’s small voice.
