What a refreshing morning—not a cloud in sight!
Today I turn sixteen! The new Kuga Ryo has arrived!
“Ryo-kun… mmm…”
As I gazed at the morning sun through the sliding window, I heard Toka’s sleep talk. We’d chatted late into the night yesterday, so she was still fast asleep.
Toka was like this even when she lived with us—she seems like the type who can sleep soundly no matter the environment. True to her roots as a former resident of a trash house. She’s got some nerve.
On the other hand, I woke up much earlier than usual, bothered by Toka’s warmth.
“You, you!”
She looked so incredibly comfortable sleeping that I poked her cheek. I was getting a little annoyed! She has no idea how I feel!
“Wauuu…”
Every time I poked her cheek, Touka made this weird sound. It started to get kind of amusing.
Birthdays are weird, huh. Nothing should be different from yesterday, yet you start feeling like you want to be a slightly different version of yourself.
Anyway, starting today, I’m implementing the new training plan: “Correcting Toka’s Aggression”! Toka attacks indiscriminately, anytime, anywhere. I won’t let Toka be the aggressor anymore. Starting today, it’s my turn all the way!
“Ryo-kun…”
I kept staring at her sleeping face for a while, and then Toka woke up.
“Morning, Toka.”
“Were you messing with me…?”
“Messing with you?”
“Like poking my chest…”
“Like hell I did!”
“But in my dream, Ryo-kun was doing it…”
“Stop being such a pervert on your own head!”
Still looking drowsy, Toka hugged her pillow and grinned.
“Happy birthday, Ryo-senpai.”
“Suddenly acting like a junior.”
“Well, you turned sixteen, senpai. As a junior, I have to show respect.”
“Wait, you weren’t acting like that before!”
“Changing my approach starting today. I love you, Ryo-senpai!”
“This is embarrassing first thing in the morning!”
“Ehehe. Senpai blushing is cute~”
“Don’t call me cute!”
“Then, you’re cool!”
“Stop with the direct compliments too!”
“Senpai, aren’t you being selfish?”
Toka chuckled, squinting her eyes under the futon. She looked incredibly happy.
“Because starting today, I’m Ryo-kun’s property.”
“What do you mean?”
“Because I’m your birthday present.”
I hadn’t doubted it, but it seemed she was dead serious about being the birthday present. Well, I don’t think anything really changes…
“No returns, no exchanges. And it comes with a lifetime warranty.”
“Like an online purchase?!”
Ugh, Toka, you’re so sleepy you don’t even know what you’re saying anymore.
“Toka, why don’t you get some sleep?”
“Yeah… I’ll take a nap.”
Saying that, Toka closed her eyes with a look of relief. Seeing her face filled me with happiness, and I couldn’t help but stroke her hair.
“Toka, I love you.”
“…!”
When I murmured that, Toka quietly nodded and turned her back to me. Her face was bright red all the way to her ears.

Two hours later, breakfast time arrived! According to yesterday’s plan, we were supposed to meet up with the Kagurazaka family at the breakfast venue.
“What are you spacing out for? Let’s hurry up and go!”
Toka was just standing there blankly, so I took her hand.
“I didn’t get to sleep in properly, so my head’s all foggy!”
“Well, that kinda defeats the whole purpose of sleeping in, doesn’t it?”
“But Ryo-kun suddenly said he really likes me!”
“You said it yourself, you know.”
I didn’t really get it, but Toka shot me this incredibly indignant look. She says it like it’s no big deal herself, so it’s totally confusing.
“Hey, if you’re gonna be wobbly, wanna hold hands and go together?”
“Wha-wh-wh-wh-wh-…”
“Eat some food, take a bath, and you’ll feel refreshed. Since it’s such a nice day, maybe I’ll take a morning bath too.”
“With me!?”
“I didn’t say that far.”
Toka puffed out her cheeks in a sulk, but tightened her grip on my hand again. We left the room and headed for the buffet hall upstairs.
“I’m holding hands with Ryo-kun…”
“Isn’t that a little late to be saying that?”
“Well, until now, it was mostly me who did it…”
“Was it?”
“Yeah…”
“Then, from now on, I’ll be the one to do it.”
“Huh!?”
Glancing sideways at the flustered Toka, we took the elevator up to the next floor.
When we reached the floor with the buffet hall, morning light streamed in through the windows, sparkling like jewels.
“My Ryo-kun cultivation plan…”
“Like I asked yesterday, what exactly does that involve?”
“A plan to spoil Ryo-kun rotten, making him depend on me completely, body and soul.”
“That’s an outrageous plan…”

And then, Toka’s dad hurried over to us… Why is he just naturally here…? Come to think of it, what happened with him staying over last night?
“Toka, I’m glad Ryo-kun held your hand for you.”
“Dad, just shut up!”
Toka’s face was flushed with embarrassment like I’d never seen before.
I get it! Getting teased like that by family really gets to you mentally!
“Onee chan! Ryo-chan! Good morning!”
While I was stunned by Asahina’s dad, the Kagurazaka family arrived right after.
“Ryo-chan, it’s your birthday, right? Actually, Kaede has a birthday present for you today too~”
Saying that, Kagurazaka climbed onto my back.
Light as a feather! Wait, you’re way too close!
“Hey! What are you doing hitting on someone else’s boyfriend?!”
“Waaah! onee chan suddenly yelled at me!”
Both of them are full of energy from the morning…
My first day of sixteen is starting off a bit too chaotic, don’t you think?
