The knife-wielding man who attempted a convenience store robbery made national news.
The internet buzzed with the sensational story of how high school students at the scene overpowered and restrained the man who threatened the clerk and tried to steal money.
In the comment section of a video I briefly glanced at, the high school students who subdued the suspect were being hailed as heroes.
Some news outlets aired surveillance footage from the time of the incident, but faces were appropriately blurred, making it impossible to identify anyone.
Personally, I was grateful for that.
Because no matter the reason, I didn’t want my real face exposed nationwide.
Anyway, Satsuki Aoi’s fate was averted, no one was injured, and the perpetrator was taken into custody.
Happily ever after, and peaceful days would return tomorrow… or so it seemed.
Morning.
When I entered the classroom, nearly everyone present focused their attention on me.
“Oh, he’s here…!!”
“Ren’s here!!”
“Yo, hero of justice!!!”
“I heard you subdued a robber with a knife!?”
“You’re seriously brave!!”
“Way to go!!”
Apparently, the whole class already knew about yesterday’s incident at the convenience store.
“Hero of Justice!” “You did great!”—such voices flew from all around, making me feel a little embarrassed.
Aoi-chan and the boy who’d been at the scene yesterday were also in the classroom. They came over to me, each offering their thanks.
“Um… Kurose-senpai! Thank you so much for helping me yesterday.”
Aoi-chan bowed her head. I scratched my head as I replied.
“It’s nothing, really. I mean… I’m just glad you’re okay, Aoi-chan…”
“If you hadn’t saved me, I… I don’t know what would’ve happened… I was so scared I couldn’t move… So you really saved me!”
“Hahaha. I didn’t do anything special. Thanks to everyone who backed me up, I managed, you know?”
“No way, Senpai, you were seriously awesome!”
The boy who’d come to class with Aoi-chan said that.
“We were all freaking out yesterday and couldn’t do anything… But then you jumped right at the culprit first! Seriously, you were so cool!”
“It’s all thanks to you, Senpai!”
“We respect you, Senpai!!”
“We’re so sorry we were too scared to help right away!!”
Saying things like that, the younger guys started carrying me on their shoulders.
What is this? This is embarrassing.
I’ve never been thanked by so many people before, I don’t know what to do…
“Ku, Kurose-kun…! Were you okay yesterday…!? You’re not hurt, are you!?”
“Kurose. Looks like you really made a big splash. It even made the news, that’s awesome.”
After Aoi-chan and the male students left, Nanase and Shiraishi came over to me next.
Nanase looked worried, while Shiraishi looked impressed.
“No injuries. See? I’m fine.”
“That’s a relief…”
Nanase let out a sigh of relief.
“Taking on an armed robber alone? You’re reckless, you know. Well… I guess that’s just you.”
“Well… honestly, it was a gamble.”
“Helping people is fine… but maybe you should value your own life a little too?”
“What’s up, Shiraishi? Worried about me?”
“I was. Just normally. Are you really not hurt anywhere?”
“…Huh? Ah, no… ah. I’m not hurt, but…”
I faltered as Shiraishi, who admitted to being normally worried, started checking my body.
“Ku, Kurose-kun!”
Nanase glared at me with eyes that seemed to want to say something.
“S-sorry, Nanase… made you worry.”
“U, uh…! I’m so glad Kurose-kun is safe…!”
Saying that, Nanase threw her arms around me.
Whistling sounds flew around us.
When I gently hugged her back, Nanase squeezed even tighter.
“…”
For some reason, Shiraishi’s cold stare pierced me.
“Um… well, I did call the police and stuff, so I guess I helped out too…”
The muffled voice nearby, muttering about his own achievements, seemed to be reaching no one but me.
