“Ah, here it comes.”
“Here it comes…!”
“Hang in there, Satsuki!”
Morning.
As I tried to slip through the school gate, I noticed a group of female students staring at me.
Looking closer, I saw they were first-year girls, with Aoi-chan at the center.
Aoi-chan was pushed forward by the girls around her and came over to me.
“S-senpai… Good morning!”
“Ah, good morning.”
When I returned her greeting, Aoi-chan handed me a paper bag she was holding.
“Th-this… is from my mother.”
“From Aoi-chan’s mother…?”
“Yes… She said she wanted to thank you, senpai, for saving my life…”
“Huh… Well, thank you…”
It felt weird to refuse, so I took it.
Probably some assorted sweets.
I’ll eat them when I get home.
“Ah, um… Senpai… about that…”
“…?”
After handing me the sweets, as I started walking toward the school building, Aoi-chan kept looking down, glancing up at me every so often.
She seemed hesitant, like she wanted to say something but couldn’t quite bring herself to.
When I stopped to wait, Aoi-chan lifted her face as if resolved and opened her mouth.
“Um… Senpai… If you’d like, at the upcoming cultural festival, would you…”
“Ku, Kurose-kun…!!”
My name was called out, cutting off Aoi-chan’s voice.
Nanase came running, panting, from the direction of the school gate we’d just passed.
“Nanase? What’s the rush?”
“U, Kurose-kun… Good morning…”
“Ah, good morning.”
“Eh…? Wh-what… um…?”
Aoi-chan looked flustered by Nanase’s sudden appearance.
After catching her breath for a moment, Nanase took several deep breaths to regain her composure. Then, clinging to my arm, she glared at Aoi-chan.
“N-no way”
“Huh…?”
“N-no way… you can’t fall for Kurose-kun…”
“Wh-what!?”
Aoi-chan’s face turned bright red at Nanase’s sudden bombshell.
“N-no, that’s not… I… I don’t… like, Senpai…”
Aoi-chan waved her hands frantically, flustered.
“Hey, Nanase. You’ve got it all wrong. I just got this from Aoi-chan.”
I showed Nanase the box of sweets.
“I got it from Aoi-chan’s mom as a thank-you for the other day.”
“R-really…? That’s all…?”
“Yeah, that’s all.”
“W-what a relief… That scared me…”
Nanase breathed a sigh of relief.
“I… saw you two from far away, so I… I misunderstood…”
“W-Why would I do anything to make Nanase worry…?”
I say something cheesy and wrap my arm around Nanase’s shoulder.
“Yeah, you’re right, Kurose-kun… Ehehe.”
Nanase flashes a big, goofy smile.
Looks like she realized it was all a misunderstanding.
I silently breathed a sigh of relief.
“So, then… Kurose-kun… shall we go to class?”
“Yeah, that’s right… Aoi-chan, thanks for this. See you.”
“Ah… yes… Senpai… see you.”
Aoi-chan raised her hand, looking a little downcast.
“How was it, Satsuki?”
“Are you okay, Satsuki?”
“That one… Could she be his girlfriend…?”
“Yeah… Probably, I think…”
With Aoi-chan and her friends’ conversation behind us, Nanase and I walked towards the school building.
When Nanase and I reached the classroom, it was enveloped in an unusual atmosphere, different from usual.
The classmates, who usually chatted until homeroom started, were now silent, staring toward the front of the room.
There, a boy and a girl faced each other with serious expressions.
“Shiraishi…?”
The girl was Shiraishi.
She stood with her arms crossed, wearing her usual cool expression.
The boy facing her looked familiar, but I didn’t know his name.
Probably a boy from another class.
He wore a tense expression, staring at Shiraishi.
“Hey, what’s going on?”
“Oh, Ren. You’re just in time!”
When I sat down and asked Aiba, he grinned and explained.
“It’s a confession. A confession.”
“A confession?”
“Shiraishi. The guy’s Kitamura from the basketball club.”
“Huh… um… which one’s doing the confessing?”
“Kitamura, obviously.”
“Huh… so she really is popular…”
I’d heard rumors since the start of the year that Shiraishi had received confessions from boys, but this was my first time actually witnessing one.
I mean, public confessions? Seriously?
“Here it comes…!”
Aiba, him voyeuristic instincts kicking in, stared intently, his eyes shining.
Amidst the gaze of many students, the public confession by the basketball club’s Kitamura finally began…
