First day of summer vacation–

“What shall I make for lunch today? …… What does she want to eat, Touka chan?”

Mom’s good mood hasn’t changed since yesterday when I came home from school and told Mom that I would be studying with Touka the next morning.

When I woke up in the morning and entered the living room, the tension was still high and I could see that she was in a good mood.

“Come to think of it, we didn’t discuss what time she would be coming…”

“It looks like Touka chan will be here at 10:00. She said, [I’m going to be here at 10 o’clock.]”

Oh, I see. It is not me but my mom.
……What is the relationship between the two of you?

Or rather, Touka will come in a few tens of minutes, so I have to prepare.

I went back to my room and started to clean up the mess that had been made over the past few days.

“The first day of summer vacation gives me an excuse to clean up my room, and this study session to finish this assignment may be more beneficial than I thought.”

I put the scattered things in their proper places, made up the bed, and finally vacuumed the room to finish what I needed to do before Touka arrived.

Since I had some time left before Touka’s arrival, I spent it lounging around and waiting for her to arrive.

At 9:58 a.m., I thought Touka would be here soon, so I left my room, went down the stairs, and waited for her in the living room.

Two minutes later, just as the TV was showing 10 o’clock, the intercom rang.

It rang at such a precise time that I wondered if she had been in front of the house a little while ago.

I went to the front door to welcome Touka, rather than thinking about the fact that she had arrived on time.

I opened the front door and let Touka in.

“Good morning, Touka. I was surprised when the intercom rang right on time.”
“Ma-kun, good morning! I don’t know if you think I’m just doing an assignment, but I was so excited about today that I came a little early.”

She had come early, after all. Well yeah

I continued talking as I walked down the hallway from the front door.

“If so, you should have told me. You didn’t have to wait outside. ……”
“But it’s only for a few minutes.”

I take Touka, who wants to see mother, into the living room.

“Mother-in-law, I’m sorry to disturb you!”
“Welcome, Touka chan. I’m going to make lunch, so study hard!”
“Yes!”

I and Touka left the living room and continued the conversation we had earlier as we walked up the stairs.

“It’s getting hotter and hotter, so I want you to talk to me properly for a few minutes from now on. I don’t want Touka to die from heat stroke.”

“……Yeah. Thanks. …… from now on means that I have got a guarantee that I can come to Mar-kun’s house during the summer holidays. And he even worries about me. ……”
“What did you say? I couldn’t catch the last part.”

I don’t know if it’s because I’m climbing the stairs or because Touka’s voice has gotten quieter, but I couldn’t hear her halfway through.

“No. It’s just that I love Ma-kun.”
“…………”

Don’t confess to me so openly with such an innocent smile. ……

It is too cute. The Touka right now’s smile was so cute that it could be declared more offensive than any nuclear weapon.

Today’s the day you have to cram in all that studying, right? If anything, you’re supposed to be feeling lazy, right?

The assumption was that the sluggish mood would be reduced to zero by the presence of Touka, but for some reason the word “victory” has already crossed my mind before I even started studying.

“Ma-kun’s room, excuse me for disturbing you!”
“I haven’t redecorated, so it’s the same as when you came before, so there’s no need to be so formal.”

Today, Touka is a little different from usual. I wonder if she was looking forward to it that much…

I go into my room, sit down at my desk, and get ready to study.

“It’s morning now, so let’s get the paperwork done first, shall we?”
“I thought the only assignment for the liberal arts was the ancient Japanese literature and English?”
““In addition to that, I think there was a task like reading a column written in a Japanese history textbook, researching it, and writing your own opinion about it.”
“Oh, the ones at the back of each chapter. …… sounds like a pain in the ass.”

Earlier’s confession still remains in my mind or perhaps because of it, I’m going to do the Japanese history assignment for Touwa now.

“Okay, which assignment do you want to start with, the Japanese or the English one?”

I decided to keep my earlier confession in the back of my mind and switch to the other side so as not to let it affect my thinking.

“Hmmm, I think I’ll start with the Japanese classics.”
“Got it!”

I and Touka put down the printouts from our bags on the desk.

“It’s a review of particles and auxiliary verbs and exercises. It’s going to take a lot of time.”
“Well yeah……”

The printout had a chapter for each category of particles and modal verbs, and a summary of long-answer questions at the back of each chapter.

“These don’t have answers, so let’s show them to each other chapter by chapter, shall we?”
“Yes. Let’s do that.”

After each chapter, we take a break while talking and showing each other. Then we return to the assignment. By repeating this process, we reached the last long-answer question without any difficulty.

“We’ve reached the end, but what are we going to do now? Should I continue with the long-answer questions, take a break, or do a few English assignments?”
“The English assignment is a book of long-answer questions, right? ……”
“Right.”
“Well, let’s do one long-answer question and then take a break.”
“It’s almost lunchtime, so it might be a good idea.”
