Work wrapped up without a hitch.
“Oh, Tenrai! Long time no see.”
“Hey, Ikemura.”
My peer Ikemura came over to chat.
Ikemura loves sales and, unlike me, doesn’t work remotely.
He’s always running around on sales calls, so it’s rare to bump into him in the office.
Me too—remote work is my norm, so it’s been quite a while since we last met.
“How many months has it been?”
“I come into the office occasionally, you know? You’re often out on sales calls, right?”
“True. But you’re good with words too, you should try sales. Want to hit the road with me?”
“Nah, too much hassle.”
“You’ll get to know some great spots.”
It sounded tempting, but I really dislike sales.
“Sales is fun, though! Like the other day, I was crossing the waterfront forest and saw this insane death flag.”
Huh?
“What was it like?”
“Two guys. One was super handsome, the other just average-looking. They were playing tag with a cop.”
Whoa, that sounds familiar.
“Were they tall or anything?”
“The handsome one was tall. Do you know something about this?”
“Nah, no clue. So what happened next?”
“Oh, right! When they were about to get surrounded by cops, the average-looking guy yelled, ‘Leave this to me! Go ahead!’ and let the handsome one escape! I was like, ‘Who says stuff like that outside of light novels?!’”
Oh crap. I know both of them…
Better not dig deeper.
“Wonder why they got chased around like that.”
“No idea?”
“Ah, whatever. Changing the subject, but between sales calls, you know? Finding places without star ratings to revisit, or exploring new spots… it’s actually pretty fun, huh?”
What kind of lonely gourmet is that?
“I’m just inspired by that whole ‘lunch ritual’ thing.”
“Huh, like Gō-san?”
“No, the Hīshi guy.”
“Why not the original?”
“If you’re eating alone, wouldn’t you want to live-tweet it?”
Doesn’t that depend on the person???
Not me.
Only you or the author would do that.
“So? Wanna grab a bite for the first time in ages? Found a great new spot recently.”
It’s a tempting offer, but there are two people at home right now.
“Thanks for the invite, but maybe another time?”
“No problem. The restaurant isn’t going anywhere.”
We were chatting as we walked, but when we left the company building, Ikemura seemed to notice something.
“There’s this super cute girl over there.”
“Huh?”
It was Mei-chan.
HAHAHA, no way.
Thinking that, I looked in the same direction again.
It was Mei-chan.
“Ah, Rai-san!!”
“Eh…?!?! Do you know Tenrai?!? Wait, that reaction… could she be… his girlfriend?!?!”
“wife.”
Without a moment’s pause, Mei-chan answered, and Ikemura was totally flustered.
“!!!!??? When the hell did you get married??”
“Absolutely not!! Well, I gotta go then!”
“No no no, explain yourself!!!”
“Another time. Work hard, okay?”
If I let Ikemura grab me, he’d grill me relentlessly. That’d be a pain.
I never expected Mei-chan to be at the company.
“Why are you here, Mei-chan?”
“Eh… Was it… not okay for me to come?”
“You deleted the monitoring app, right?”
“I just followed you from behind when you came in, so it’s safe.”
What part is safe!?!?
“Alright, let’s go buy dinner together!”
“…From now on, stop waiting at the entrance when I come to work. It’s bad for my heart.”
“Yes♡”
I found myself wishing I switch to remote work until I went home.
