Summer break is already halfway over. Time really flies when you’re having fun. Like… what’s the best way to put it? Hmm… Anyway, it’s just so fast.
I was supposed to hang out with my classmates tomorrow, but more than half of them had plans, so we decided to reschedule. That means I’m free tomorrow now.
I made plans earlier than them, so why aren’t they prioritizing me? Common sense says they should prioritize me. But if I say “common sense,” that’s the end of it, because I’m the one lacking common sense.
Anyway, tomorrow’s free now.
Oh, come to think of it, the girls’ basketball team tweeted about a practice match tomorrow. …Maybe I’ll go cheer them on.
The club president’s done a lot for me, so I want to give back a little.
My cheering alone won’t be enough, so maybe I’ll invite someone to come with me. It’s not because I’m lonely or anything. …Really.
“Anyone free tomorrow?” I ask around. Via messaging app, of course. I’m not some creep who’d go ring someone’s doorbell just to ask.
I mean, I could go by myself? But if I suddenly rang the doorbell and yelled, “Hey~ Saotome~ Open the door~” wouldn’t that be scary? If my face was right up to the intercom camera, wouldn’t they faint?
That example was for Saotome, but what if I did it to Niiro, Hisada-chan, or Fumi-senpai?
Fumi-senpai would probably laugh off my joke and forgive me. Sure, I’m a bit of a middle schooler, but the “senpai” part is stronger. That’s rare for a middle schooler, right? A middle schooler who’s actually considerate.
If I did it to Niiro and Hisada-chan… well, maybe someone with a lot of life insurance could get away with it.
Alright, back to the topic. After asking around if anyone was free tomorrow, it turned out only Hisada-chan was available.
The others had plans and turned me down.
‘I’m free, but what?’
That’s what she messaged back. She’s not mad, right? This is just a question, right? It means ‘I’m free, but do you need something from me?’ It doesn’t mean ‘I’m free, but do you have a problem with that?’ does it?
It feels extra scary because it’s just text. If I could see her expression, I could just joke it off…
My hands are shaking as I type. One mistake and I’m dead.
“Sorry for the sudden request. If you’re free tomorrow, the girls’ basketball team is having a practice match. Would you like to come cheer them on with me? If you don’t want to, it’s totally fine to say no.”
Alright, being this polite should keep her from getting mad.
‘What’s with that tone? You think you can walk all over me?’
I was polite, and still got yelled at.
‘I’m not walking all over you!!’
Ah, scary scary. Why do I have to be so freaked out just exchanging messages…
“Drop the honorifics.”
Getting yelled at for using polite language? But it literally has “respect” in the word…
“Sorry.”
Apologizing first probably can’t hurt.
“What’s with you lately? I’m not mad.”
“I’m not mad,” but does that actually look angry? Or am I just seeing things? Her frustration is coming through in the text.
‘Well, whatever. What’s up with tomorrow?’
Right, I was just going to ask her to come watch the girls’ basketball practice game tomorrow. I got so intimidated by her scolding I froze up.
‘The girls’ basketball team has a practice game tomorrow. Wanna come watch?’
Well, I asked her out, but she’s definitely not coming. There’s no way she would. It’d be scary if she did.
And why did I even ask her… It’d be cruel for her to turn me down.
Hisada-chan is kind like that. Even though I’m usually creepy Mizuno, she’s the type who’d feel bad turning down an invitation when she’s free.
That’s right! She looks like that, but she’s actually kind! She’s the type who gets misunderstood easily! But normally, she’s properly scary!
See? She was replying right away just now, but now she’s freaking out about how to refuse! Think a little harder before you invite someone, me.
Hisada-chan, don’t say you’re free either… It’s because you say you’re free that you get invited by creepy guys like me, you know?
‘It’s been crazy hot lately, so if you’re not feeling well, it’s totally fine to say no.’
This gives her the option to say she’s not feeling well lately and skip it. That should make it easier for her to refuse.
“I’m good with heat and feeling great, so I think I’ll go.”
Huh? That’s not the response I expected. I didn’t know Hisada-chan was good with heat.
“You might get sunburned, so you don’t have to force yourself.”
This should make it easier to refuse.
“I love UV rays, so I’m totally up for it”
Unusual!… No, wait, nobody’s like that! I get loving sunlight, but loving UV rays? Never heard of it.
So does Hisada-chan get mad when she sees UV protection stuff? …Yep, she really is unusual.
But if I say this, Hisada-chan will definitely say she’s not going after all.
“It’ll just be the two of us, but is that okay?”
This way, Hisada-chan won’t come either.
“Where should we eat lunch tomorrow?”
Too fast! Wait, she’s trying to decide tomorrow’s lunch assuming we’re definitely going.
No, no, no, no! We haven’t even decided tomorrow’s train times yet, and talking about lunch is way too soon!
Did I miss a few rounds of back-and-forth I’m not aware of? Checking again, I’m still suddenly being invited to lunch…
It’s fine being just the two of us…
Seriously, don’t blame me if Saotome gets jealous…
“So, putting lunch aside, we’re just going to watch the game, right? What about tomorrow’s time?”
And then we confirmed tomorrow’s meeting place and time.
I was pretty much planning on going alone, so this turned out unexpectedly. But I think the basketball club would be happier cheering with two people than just one. Maybe I’ll just break even for them.
Somehow, even though it was just texting, I’m suddenly exhausted. Tired, but thinking about getting a date alone with Hisada-chan makes it totally worth it.
“Alright!”
Tomorrow looks like it’ll be a tiring day, so I decided to pump myself up before going to sleep.
