For the first time, the entire Kuga family gathered for dinner.

“Father-in-law, I’ll pour you some sake!”

“What? Is that okay?”

At the same time, my father’s evening drink began. I think my father is quite fond of alcohol.

“I never thought that one day in my life, Toka would pour me a beer…”

“I’ll do it anytime from now on!”

“What a luxurious home this is…”

Saying this, my father took a sip of beer with deep emotion.

“Wow! This beer is so delicious!”

My father was drinking his beer with obvious enjoyment. Isn’t that unfair, Toka brand? Just because Toka poured it, everything tastes delicious.

“Toka, will you be my daughter?”

“Yes, I will!”

“An immediate answer?”

What is my father doing? Don’t be surprised after bringing up the topic yourself. I can see my father doting on my girlfriend and her flattering my father at the same time. I have very mixed feelings about this. What’s more, my father is an idiot, so he doesn’t notice the cold stares from the women in my family at all.

“I never imagined that you were in the same class as Ryo. When he was a child, Ryo really liked Toka.”

“You’ve told that story about three times already!”

If their reactions are the same, then the story is the same too! Even Toka must be getting tired of hearing it by now!

“Really? I want to hear all the details!”

No, she wasn’t tired of it at all… If I leave it up to these people, they’ll keep repeating the same story over and over again.

“Father, that’s why, for a while, Toka…”

“I understand. Your mother told me about it.”

My father agreed with a smile. He was the only one I was worried about, but now I can finally relax.

“It may have been a great stroke of luck for Ryo. I’m glad you got into that high school.”

“Well, I won’t deny that…”

I felt embarrassed when he suddenly said that in such a serious tone.

“Father-in-law, I’m the one who’s lucky.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m the one who got to meet Ryo kun. If it weren’t for Ryo kun, I wouldn’t be who I am today…”

Toka said that to my father with a big smile on her face. I had a vague idea, but Toka is definitely better at communicating with adults than with her classmates! She would never talk to someone like this at school.

And my father was completely captivated by Toka’s smile.

“Haah, Ryo, I’m so jealous…”

My mother gave my father, who was holding his head in his hands, a cold stare.

“It’s about time you shut up and ate your dinner.”

“Yes…”

My mother spoke to him in a polite tone, and my father dejectedly picked up his chopsticks again. Why did I feel so tired even though the whole family was gathered around the dinner table?

But strangely, it wasn’t a bad feeling. Toka was smiling happily, and my mother looked somewhat relieved. I like this kind of atmosphere. But there was one person who was quieter than usual…

“Thank you for the meal…”

My younger sister, Yuzuha, finished her meal early and stood up. She said only that, and with an unusually quiet sound of her chair scraping across the floor, she headed toward the kitchen.

“Yuzuha, are you done already?”

Mom called out, but Yuzuha only replied with a small “Yes” and turned her back. What’s going on? Usually, she’d ask for seconds.

“I’m just full…”

She muttered in a voice that was barely audible and retreated into her room. Oh no, she’s definitely in a bad mood.

“Did I do something wrong…?”

Toka watched the scene with a very nervous look on her face.

“Yuzu is going through a sensitive period right now. Don’t worry about it, Toka-chan.”

“But…”

Toka frowned apologetically. My mother smiled gently and patted her on the shoulder.

“It’s okay. She’ll calm down soon. Besides, Yuzu doesn’t dislike you at all.”

Toka nodded, looking a little relieved at those words, but she still couldn’t hide her concern.

“I’m sorry, Toka-chan. Yuzu isn’t a bad girl.”

My father also said the same thing to Toka. I only know about my own family, but I guess this is what a normal father is like…

A father…

That night.

“Ryo kun, is there any way I can become friends with Yuzu chan?”

As usual, I was combing Toka’s hair after her bath when she asked me that question.

“Hmm…”

I was curious too, but Yuzuha is the type of person who gets more upset when people pay attention to her in situations like this.

“Just leave her alone for now.”

“But…”

“It’s not Toka’s fault. As mother said, Yuzuha is going through a difficult age right now.”

If it were Toka, I think it would be wrong to leave her alone at a time like this. But Yuzuha is the type who wants to be left alone. Raising children is difficult. You have to tailor your approach to each individual. It’s not like I’m raising Yuzuha or anything.

“If you say so, Ryo kun, I’ll try not to worry about it too much…”

“Yeah, when she calms down, I’ll ask her to come play.”

“…”

Toka looked like she was deep in thought.

“What’s wrong?”

“No, I was just thinking that your father is like that.”

“Did you do something rude?”

“No, I’m really happy that you accepted me.”

Even as she said that, Toka’s expression was a little gloomy.

“…Are you worried about your father?”

“Eh? Um, just a little. I think my family is a little strange.”

“I don’t know about that…”

Next week is parent-teacher conferences… Then it’s not surprising that I’m about to make a suggestion to Toka.

“Toka, why don’t you invite your father to the open house?”

“Eh?”

“Because your father is your real guardian, right?”

“But it’s hard to call him just for that…”

“If it’s hard for you, I can call him for you, if you don’t mind.”
