“Are you interested in the medical school recommendation admission program?”

I tilted my head at the teacher’s words.

I could hear what he was saying, but I couldn’t understand the meaning of the words he had spoken.

After a short pause, my relaxed, casual voice slipped out.

“Huh?”

“Don’t ‘huh’ me. How about the medical school recommendation admission program?”

“……”

As I pondered, the teacher repeated the same words over and over.

Medical school, recommendation, quota…they were repeated so often that my ears were sore.

And finally, I understood what he meant.

“…Is that what you’re talking about?”

“Yes. It’s a big deal.”

“I thought you were going to lecture me about my attitude toward life.”

“What is there to be angry about with a bookworm like you?”

Being called a bookworm by the teacher again made me flinch.

I wish he’d choose his words more carefully.

Plus, realizing that I’d spent the whole day mentally drained from unnecessary worry and tension, I felt like I’d been cheated.

Bookworms like me aren’t used to being scolded, so our hearts are pretty fragile.

Still, a recommendation.

That’s an unexpected offer.

Come to think of it, I think I heard something like that before.

Apparently, there was a previous instance where a recommendation slot for the medical department was offered to an exceptionally outstanding student with excellent grades and passion.

Most likely the information came from Reisa or Nagisaki, but let’s set that aside.

So that’s how it came to me.

“I’m interested.”

“Your reaction seems a bit flat, but never mind. The important part starts here.”

After that, the teacher provided a detailed explanation.

The quota is for Seirin no Jo University.

It’s a private university, but this recommendation quota itself guarantees admission with a scholarship, so tuition is almost fully waived.

The entrance exam scores are slightly lower than those of Kaiho University, which I had originally aimed for, but the level of support is on par with their special admission quota.

Plus, the difficulty level seems to be lower.

It’s not like a regular designated school recommendation where admission is almost guaranteed, and the difficulty is high, but for me, who had been aiming for top admission at Kaoh University, it’s a better condition.

If I fail, I can still take the Kaiho University exam because the schedules are different.

In short, it’s just an extra chance with no risk.

It’s a great opportunity with no reason to refuse.

No, it’s too good to be true.

…Wait, a recommendation admission slot? Seriously?

“Eeeeh !? A recommendation slot for me !?”

“Whoa !? Don’t shout so suddenly !”

“I-I’m sorry ! I just realized it now !”

“Your reaction is a bit delayed. Is the connection bad?”

“Eh?”

“You’re still not getting it. Never mind.”

I don’t understand why he’s getting angry, but I don’t care.

I’m so excited about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I want to shout out loud.

But maybe he was taken aback by my reaction, because the teacher, who had calmed down a bit, wiped the smile off his face.

He then began speaking in a serious tone.

“We’re going to have a three-way meeting to discuss your future plans, but I thought I should talk to you about this first. I want you to discuss it with your parents.”

“I see…”

“Yes. The entrance exam schedule is earlier than usual, so there will be a lot to prepare for. …But there’s one problem.”

“A problem?”

The mood suddenly turned gloomy, and I frowned.

“This spot isn’t confirmed yet, of course. It’s just a possibility if you can maintain your current grades.”

“So if my grades drop, the offer is off, right?”

Well, that’s a given.

I nodded to show the teacher I understood.

But the teacher’s expression didn’t brighten.

Seeing that, I got a bad feeling.

Maybe it was because I heard footsteps coming down the hallway next to the classroom at that moment.

It was an all-too-familiar, worst-case scenario.

“Actually, there’s another student who’s aiming for that spot, and…”

The moment the teacher spoke, the door opened at a perfectly timed moment.

It was Takagi Rio, a tall, handsome, brilliant student.

To be honest, I had already sensed it, so I glared at him.

“I’m also aiming for that spot. I told you, didn’t I? I’m going to crush your dreams.”

“What you were talking about was using the Kaio entrance exam to take the scholarship spot from me, right?”

“It’s almost the same. In the recent ability test and the mock exam that hasn’t been returned yet, you’re probably the top. But before that, I had been the top all along. Since I have something to talk to you about, there’s no way I can’t take that spot from you.”

“…Do you want to become a doctor?”

“I’ve never even considered it.”

He’s really childish.

Does he have some kind of strange disease that makes him die if he doesn’t interfere with others every time?

When I become a doctor, I want to examine his head first.

Poor thing.

Joking aside, the teacher nods with a grim expression.

It seems that he is really aiming for this spot.

But so what?

“In other words, whoever gets first place in the upcoming midterm exam will be one step closer to the recommendation spot, right?”

“Yeah, that’s right. That’s why I talked to you today.”

After confirming with the teacher, I turn my gaze back to Takagi.

“Do whatever you want. Anyway, if I lose to someone like you who only thinks about holding others back, then getting into medical school through the recommendation spot in that state would be a disaster. I won’t lose this time either.”

“Let me tell you this: you were the one who pulled me down first. You sent that monster of a woman my way.”

Takagi leaves, muttering under his breath, but I no longer feel irritated.

To begin with, it was my own fault for asking for Kashi, so I wish he wouldn’t blame me.

This time, I had a score to settle with him over the matter of Nagisa’s insults.

I’ll settle everything at once.

Besides, there’s no way I’ll lose.

If I win here, the recommendation spot is almost certain.

For someone like me who is seriously pursuing my dreams and living with a literal hunger for success, there’s no way I’d slack off at such a golden opportunity.

If anything, I’d be willing to give it my all here.

But then, I remember Nagisa and snap back to reality.

What’s bothering me is the conversation I had with her after the aptitude test.

[I’m also applying to Kaiho University.]

[Eh !?]

[Hehe. Of course, it’s not the medical school, but it’s still pretty tough. It’s better to aim high, right? Besides….]

[…..?]

[Kaiho University has you there. That alone is enough motivation for me. I want to be with you more, so I want to keep up with you…ah.]

Nagisa was trying to apply to the same university as me so she could be with me.

I heard my brother’s story, and I don’t know if she still feels the same way, but setting that aside for now, what would happen if I were recommended to another university?

It’s a little concerning.

I shouldn’t be worrying about such things, but I can’t help but think about it.

Nagisa is my irreplaceable friend.

Misunderstanding my deep thoughts, the teacher spoke up.

“Takagi, since he surpassed you in grades, his study hours have visibly increased. Many people recognize your efforts. That’s why this opportunity came up.”

“I see.”

“As your homeroom teacher, considering your passion and family circumstances, I really want you to take this opportunity, but unfortunately, it’s not that simple.”

Well, that’s understandable.

It’s not something that can be decided by the class teacher alone.

From the perspective of someone who’s been inconvenienced by his efforts, it’s like, “Don’t mess with me” but the teachers probably don’t care.

Admission decisions affect the school’s reputation, so it’s only natural to give the spot to someone with a higher chance of success, not out of sympathy.

As I’ve said before, Takagi is truly outstanding academically.

“I won’t lose, so it doesn’t matter.”

“Edano?”

“I’ll prove whether I’m just a useless nerd or not.”

Enough of this already.

This will be the last time I deal with him.

I’ll completely crush his spirit so he’ll never think of interfering again.

Holding the envelope with the documents, I smiled.
