Hold on a sec. My guess is, if things keep going like this, I’ll be the only one left out. Those two definitely want to teach Saotome. So who am I supposed to learn from? There are three of them, but I’m studying alone? That’s lonely and defeats the whole purpose of a study group. If this keeps up, I’ll end up stuck in remedial lessons while they flaunt their lovey-dovey stuff in my face. Getting remedial lessons is fine, but being forced to watch them make out? That’s unacceptable.
So we need another sacrificial lamb.
The question is who to pick. Ideally, someone who could actually teach me. I’d still have to watch them flirt, but at least I wouldn’t be stuck in remedial lessons.
Is there really no one convenient enough to save me from this predicament?
“Shota, good morning.”
“Class President!”
While I was fretting, the class president greeted me, and lightning struck inside me. This is the one!
See, I really only have the class president. Saotome might have two heroines, but I only have the class president.
“What’s up, Shota?”
“I just realized I really only have the class president.”
It really hit me again—the class president is the only one for me. How many times has she saved me from the seat next to hers? I got through the parts I didn’t understand in class and my homework because she was there.
“…Huh? What’s wrong all of a sudden? Did you eat something weird?”
She’s so kind… I’m gonna fall for her.
“Please teach me!”
I clapped my hands together and bowed my head. If I show enough sincerity, it should work. Sorry, Class President, but you’re the type who can’t ignore someone in trouble, so this is the best approach. To put it bluntly, I’m taking advantage of your kindness.
“What? That? Could you say it a bit more normally?”
“So, is that a yes?”
“Yeah, sure. It’s Shota’s request, after all.”
It kinda makes me happy she calls me Shota. Makes me feel like I’m special. Not that she doesn’t call other guys by their first names too, but still.
“As expected of the Class President! I wouldn’t be who I am without you!”
“Mouu, Stop it already~”
Cute. I really want the Class President to be happy. I hope she doesn’t get fooled by a bad guy like me.
“I’m here, and so are Saotome, Sarasa-chan, and Haruka-chan.”
“…Oh, I see.”
“Well, you know… just the two of us? That’s a bit much, don’t you think?”
“Ahahaha”
Well, knowing the class president, she probably wasn’t thinking that, but I said it just in case. Even I’d be uncomfortable alone with her. I’d get so nervous I couldn’t study at all.
“I can’t tell if Shota has high or low self-esteem.”
“I doubt many people have it as high as mine.”
It’s not so much me as Mizuno Shota who has it high. That guy’s amazing, I should learn a thing or two from him.
Grandma said it too.
[Hiro-chan is an amazing kid, so have confidence.]
Ugh…
This study session is definitely going to boost my likability with Saotome, and I won’t need remedial classes.
We’re in the library now. All five of us, including me, gathered safely. Before we start studying, I want to thank everyone for coming.
“Thanks for coming today. The reason we gathered is simple: to get help with our studies. With everyone’s help, Saotome and I might not need remedial classes. So, I’m counting on you all today.”
I’m satisfied I managed to say something that sounded right. After I finished, Hisada-chan almost clapped but quickly pulled her hands back.
“Shut up, Mizuno! Don’t do that here!”
“Sorry.”
It’s obvious you have to be quiet in the library. But I wanted to try it. Besides, your voice was loud too. Also, how do you know my name? Am I that famous?
“Well, if you didn’t know, please tell me.”
Our study session began in my quiet voice.
Oh, by the way, the seating arrangement is: a rectangular desk with Saotome next to me, Hisada-chan across from me, and Niiro next to me. The class president sits between Hisada-chan and me.
This way, I can get help from both of them, so my likability will skyrocket. When I don’t want to see them, I can get help from the class president, so it’s totally fine.
Anyway, I’ll skip the remedial class for now and focus on studying. Come to think of it, there’s an event during summer break too, so if I take the remedial class, I won’t be able to participate.
This is so hard~~~~!!!!!
What is this? Do high schoolers really solve stuff like this? It’s so hard I can’t even figure out what makes it difficult.
I’m gonna stretch for a sec. Maybe it’s too soon, only 10 minutes in, but whatever. Everyone else is working so hard, they’re awesome. Suddenly I feel embarrassed about myself.
Huh, wait a minute. Just realized, but Niiro is sitting right next to me. Like, super close.
I can’t resist temptation.
“Get this part?”
I asked hernext to me about a problem I didn’t understand.
Hang on. I gave in to temptation, but there’s a silver lining: by being the first to ask, I made it easier for others to get help. We could’ve ended up with everyone sitting in silence. So what I did was probably the right call.
“Where?”
“Here.”
I pointed to the problem I didn’t understand.
…Whoa! Way too close! My breath might hit you!
No, no, no, no, no, I can’t concentrate at all! This is a happy accident! I only asked about the problem I didn’t understand, I didn’t get close because I had any ulterior motives, so I’m safe, right?
“Hey, are you actually listening?”
“Huh? O-of course I’m listening!”
That reflexive use of polite language is creepy, I know it myself. I’m 100% sure my mouth corners are turned up right now. I’m confident enough to say that without even looking in a mirror.
“So, here~”
Did you see that? She tucked her hair behind her ear. Any guy would get a little fluttery over that, right? I couldn’t be friends with someone who’d be like, “Whatever.”
Niiro’s trying so hard to teach me. You might think, “Then just listen properly,” but it’s not sinking in. All my past memories are gone, and I can only think about Niiro right in front of me. If my Tokidoki fans saw this, they’d go nuts.
“Hm?”
“Ah, I’m listening properly”
Whoa, close call. Almost got caught just staring instead of listening. If she caught me, I wouldn’t be able to see her anymore.
Still, this is a prime seat. Is this what they call an SS seat? When did I even become a fan club member? But honestly, even 20,000 yen might be cheap for this.
Thud!
Pain shot through my shin.
“Ow!”
It happened so fast my brain couldn’t process it. Did someone just attack my shin? Why? This is the library, right?
“Huh? Wha? What?”
I look around to see who hit my shin.
Saotome and the class president look confused, but only Hisada-chan stares at me coldly.
“…Because your face was creepy.”
She saw through me~ She saw I wasn’t concentrating on studying~. Does that mean she saw me staring at her the whole time too? …So embarrassing.
“Sorry, I guess I lost focus for a bit.”
“……”
Even so, Hisada-chan kept glaring at me. Was she annoyed that I wasn’t studying that much?
But then again, it must be annoying that I invited her and then wasn’t concentrating on studying. You’d think, “Do you even want to study?”
“Sorry. Can you explain it again?”
“Mouu~ listen properly.”
“Sorry, sorry.”
This time, I’ll focus properly on the problem and listen. I’d rather die than go to remedial classes, and I don’t want Hisada-chan to dislike me any more than she already does.
I did think that at times.
Well, when she’s this close, you’re bound to look, right? Opportunities like this don’t come often. I won’t have many chances to participate in events anymore, so I need to savor it while I can.
Hehehe~ So cute.
Thud!
“Ow!”
The same spot! Attacked the same spot again!
“……”
Hisada-chan is glaring at me with an incredibly cold stare. Looks like I got caught again. …I’m such an idiot.
“Mizuno! Come here!”
“…Yes.”
The librarian called me over. This is definitely the kind of thing where I’m going to get yelled at…
On the way over, I caught Hisada-chan’s eye, but she turned away with a huff. Does she hate me that much?
But, I was just barely happy.
