A week had passed since our sleepover and it was now a week before the final exam. We are studying together in my room.
Both Alice and I are able to solve basic problems without any trouble, so we are studying mainly application problems that are difficult in all subjects.
By the way, since my mom is away for part time until the evening, I’m alone with Alice, but it’s becoming so common that I don’t even think about it anymore.
“…I’m getting tired after two hours of continuous work.”
“Yeah, I think it’s time to take a break.”
After closing the textbooks and problem books that were spread out on the table, we stood up and stretched.
“By the way, Takuma, have you studied your sub-subjects yet?”
“Actually, I haven’t done that much in those areas yet.”
So-called sub-subjects, such as health and physical education and home economics, basically involve memorization, so I put them on the back burner for the time being.
“The same goes for secondary subjects, which are worth 100 points, and if you don’t study hard you may regret it.”
“That’s for sure.”
If I slack off and don’t get enough points, I definitely won’t be able to beat Alice, so I have no intention of cutting corners. As I was thinking about this, I suddenly heard a rustling sound coming from outside the window.
I opened the curtains and looked out the window to see that it had begun to rain heavily.
“I knew it was going to rain.”
“It was predicted to rain in the evening, so it’s to be expected.”
“It’s a good thing it didn’t start raining while we were at school.”
I’m a little depressed because I think the forecast is for rain all the way through to tomorrow night. Well, it’s the rainy season now, so it can’t be helped.
After a short break, we resumed our studies, but the rain outside the window was getting heavier and heavier, and it even started to thunder.
“Hey, it looks like your hands haven’t moved at all since a while ago, are you okay?”
“I’m fine. ……”
Alice was as usual right after she resumed her studies, but as time went by, I noticed that she started to behave more and more suspiciously.
At first I didn’t know what was causing this, but as I observed Alice’s condition, I found the answer.
“Are you afraid of thunder?”
“I-I’m not afraid of thunder.”
I was almost certain from Alice’s reaction that she was afraid of thunder. Even if I continue studying as I am now, I won’t be able to concentrate or get it into my head, so I think it’s better to take a break today.
Just as I was about to suggest that, the lights in the house went out and it was pitch black with a sound like a thunderbolt striking somewhere.
“Kyaaaaaah!”
Alice screamed and hugged me with all her might.
“Calm down, it’s probably just the breaker tripping.”
I tried to reassure her, but she seemed to be in a panic and wouldn’t move away from me. It was a terrible breakdown of character from the usual Alice.
“In the meantime, I’m going to go check the breakers, will you let me go?”
“I can’t, you can’t leave me alone!”
“Then we’ll go check it out together, okay?”
“…… got it.”
I use the light on my phone to illuminate the hallway as I walk with Alice to the bathroom where the breaker is located. Then I checked the breakers and found that none of them had tripped.
“That means the power is out, and considering it hasn’t been restored yet, it’s going to be a while before it’s restored.”
Even when lightning strikes and there is some kind of problem with the power lines, they are usually supposed to be restored after a minute. But if the power hasn’t been restored after more than a minute, there must have been some kind of major trouble.
“There’s nothing we can do here, so let’s go back to my room for now.”
“……Yes.”
Alice’s voice was as weak as ever, as if it were going to disappear at any moment. The current situation must be very scary.
We returned to our room, but there was nothing we could do since there was no electricity. When there is a power outage, we are reminded of how much modern people rely on electricity.
“Hey, Takuma, I’m scared so hug me”
“Like this?”
“Thanks …….”
It’s a request I would normally refuse, but just today it’s special. Anyway, I wanted to help Alice who was shaking with fear.
After I hugged her, she didn’t tremble much when she heard the sound of thunder, so it seems to have been very effective. Before I knew it, Alice was still asleep while being hugged by me.
“Let’s just put her on my bed for now.”
I lifted Alice up and tried to put her on the bed, but a big problem occurred here. Alice was holding on to me tightly as she slept.
I couldn’t pull her away from me forcibly because I might wake her up.
“I guess we’ll just have to lie together like this.”
I felt that it would only be a problem for a man and a woman who are not in a relationship to lie in the same bed, but to be honest, one more sleepover wouldn’t make much difference since we had slept in the same bed during our sleepover last week anyway.
So I lay in bed with Alice in my arms until the electricity was restored.
