The regular exams are fast approaching.

Serious people probably make sure to set aside study time regularly and never panic before tests, but I’m not the type to diligently do my prep and review day-to-day. So, as exam season draws near, I always start studying in a panic.

At least, I have a study session with Nanase scheduled for tomorrow.

Nanase seems good at studying, so she said she’d help me with my weak subjects.

The place is the city library, and we’re meeting at 11 AM.

The tests start early next week, so if I don’t really buckle down and study today and tomorrow, I’ll be completely out of time.

For today, I’ll focus mainly on the memorization subjects.

Memorization subjects are basically just cramming knowledge into your head, so there’s no real skill involved.

I’ll have Nanase help me with my weak areas like math and chemistry tomorrow.

“Ugh… there are this many words to memorize…?”

As I groaned at the sheer number of English words within the test range, a shadow suddenly fell across the room.

I looked at the window I’d left open for ventilation.

Something passed overhead, blocking the sun.

I thought it might be a bird, but it felt far too large for that.

I stepped away from my desk to check outside the window.

Looking up, I saw countless grim reapers swarming overhead, passing in a dense flock.

Each time they passed, the sun was blocked, making the room brighten and darken in turn.

“Whoa… this is not peaceful…”

I’d never seen so many grim reapers before.

I strained my eyes to see where they were flying.

From my apartment, perched on a moderately high hill within the city, I could see a fair stretch of the streets below.

The direction they were heading toward was an eight-story, fairly large apartment complex.

Countless grim reapers vanished as if sucked into the building.

“That’s way too many deaths… What is going on…?”

I recalled the time I saved Shiraishi on the train.

Back then, there were as many grim reapers on the train as there were people.

Grim reapers generally attach themselves to one person per death.

So, that many grim reapers heading for the apartment complex meant that many deaths were about to occur there.

“…!”

I hesitated, unsure what to do.

I’d abandoned countless people possessed by Death Gods before.

I couldn’t save every single person possessed by a Death God that came into my sight.

So, I’d made a basic rule: I’d only save people from death if I had a connection to them.

Following that rule meant I didn’t have to save the people living in that apartment complex.

Well, it’s not impossible that someone I know lives in that apartment complex…

“…Forget it. I’m not Superman.”

If this were a comic book hero, he’d rush to save the apartment complex residents without hesitation.

But I’m neither a comic book hero nor a movie Superman.

Every time I save someone possessed by the Grim Reaper, I risk my own life.

If I tried to save every single person possessed by the Grim Reaper I saw, my life wouldn’t last.

I can’t save everyone.

I only save people when those around them are possessed by the Grim Reaper.

That’s the rule I made for myself.

“… ”

I tell myself this and sit down at my desk.

I try to focus on studying, but the pen just won’t move.

Even trying to memorize English vocabulary, nothing stuck in my head.

My mind was foggy, and I couldn’t stop thinking about that apartment complex.

“Damn it!”

I cursed under my breath and stood up.

Changing into my outdoor clothes, I threw open the door and bolted out of the apartment.

I hurried down the stairs and ran onto the road.

Looking up, the last Reaper was flying right above me.

I ran down the road, gasping for breath, trying not to lose sight of that grim reaper.

“…!”

Maybe someone I knew lived in that apartment complex.

So this wasn’t breaking the rules at all.

I told myself that, and ran desperately after the grim reaper.
