“I’m so happy Kurose-kun likes it. Actually, I wrote the lyrics for this single myself, you know?”
“Huh. Really?”
“Yeah. Usually I leave both the lyrics and the music to the professionals, but this time I really wanted to write it myself, so I gave it my best shot.”
“That’s amazing.”
“The music was composed later to fit the lyrics. How did it turn out?”
“…You can write lyrics too? Hoshikawa, you’re amazing.”
“Yeah. I surprised myself, too? But I just couldn’t help writing it. It was like pouring my heart’s feelings into the lyrics… I felt like I poured my whole soul into it.”
“Th-that’s incredible. You’ve got real talent, Hoshikawa.”
“Not really.”
Hoshikawa was smiling brightly.
Why?
That smile seemed different from the one Hoshikawa usually showed others.
Something dark and inexpressible lurked beneath it, making it feel oddly damp and heavy.
Of course, it could just be my imagination.
“I won’t let you escape. No matter where you are, no matter who you become.”
“…?”
“Even if you have a lover. I’ll chase after you, no matter where you go.”
“…H-Hoshikawa?”
“Just the two of us is enough. I don’t need anything else.”
“…H-Hey?”
“Everything else should just disappear. Everything and everyone except us two should vanish.”
“…!”
Hoshikawa suddenly saying such things made me take a step back.
Then, still wearing that cheerful smile, Hoshikawa took a step closer.
Tension hung thick in the air.
“All of it… was lyrics I wrote.”
“…”
“What’s wrong, Kurose-kun?”
“N-no… nothing…”
I understood.
Hoshikawa had just hummed the lyrics.
She’d casually sung the lyrics she’d written.
There was no deeper meaning to it, yet for some reason, a chill ran down his spine.
“Speaking of which, Kurose-kun. The regular tests are coming up soon, right?”
“…Huh? Ah, ah… Yeah, I guess…”
“If you’d like, maybe we could have a study session together…”
“What’s going on?”
A voice echoed from behind.
It was a cold, prickly voice that felt bone-chilling just to hear.
Turning around, Nanase was standing there.
She was probably holding a bag with her gym clothes, standing still and staring intently at me.
“Hoshikawa-san…?”
“It’s Nanase-san.”
Hoshikawa smiled brightly.
“Did you find what you were looking for?”
“What are you doing?”
Nanase slowly approached.
Her gaze never left Hoshikawa, fixed on her the entire time.
“I was just talking with Kurose-kun. We happened to bump into each other here.”
“Talking? About what?”
Nanase glared at Hoshikawa.
Hoshikawa, completely unfazed by Nanase’s sharp tone, kept smiling cheerfully.
“Nothing important, really?”
“…What kind of talk?”
“Nothing I feel like telling Nanase-san, I guess.”
“…Something you don’t want me to hear?”
“Eh? No way”
Hoshikawa put a hand to her mouth and laughed, looking amused.
The tension in the air was palpable, and I swallowed hard.
Students walking home glanced our way, wondering what was going on.
“…Liar.”
“I’m not lying? That’s harsh, Nanase-san.”
“…It’s pointless.”
“Hmm?”
“Kurose-kun and I… are bound by an unbreakable bond.”
“Huh?”
“No matter what you do… Kurose-kun only has eyes for me…”
“What are you talking about?”
“…That’s all I have to say to you.”
Saying that, Nanase started walking.
Her uncompromising stride left me scrambling to keep up.
I glanced back and saw Hoshikawa waving at me.
“Bye-bye, Kurose-kun. See you tomorrow?”
“Oh, uh… See ya…”
“Nanase-san, see you tomorrow too, right?”
“…”
Nanase didn’t turn back to Hoshikawa’s greeting, just kept walking briskly on.
