One holiday morning after the sports festival.
I had come to a certain hotel with some of my classmates, including Nishihara-san.
“Is this the place, the hotel at Mukai-kun’s place?”
“Yeah, probably. I think I know where it is. ……”
“It’s bigger than I thought.”
The hotel standing in front of us had an eye-catching presence.
The towering building is a perfect blend of old and new, with a quaint pattern on the outer walls.
A large signboard inscribed with the name ‘Yubel Hotel Mukai’ looms majestically, yet somehow softly, as if to promise visitors an extraordinary time. Although the hustle and bustle of the city should have been right next door, time seemed to flow more slowly here, and the entire hotel was like a beautiful silhouette, like a painting.
We were taken aback by such a hotel, but stepped inside.
“Welcome to the Yubel Hotel Mukai”
We were immediately greeted as if we were VIPs, and we were a little stiff, when a familiar figure walked up from the back.
“Oh~, good morning. I’m sorry you had to come all the way here.”
Unlike usual, Mukai-kun, who looks like an able hotelier in his spiffy outfit, arrives, and classmates are a little confused.
“Today I asked you to come here to take measurements for the tuxedo for the festival and to teach you how to serve customers. The meeting time for the guys has been shifted. I didn’t want the possibility of guys hearing about it.”
“Mukai-kun, are you a man of ability?”
“The son of such a big hotel?”
‘Also, I think they’ve cleared schedule until tomorrow, is that all right?”
Mukai-kun’s interrogation made us look at each other, but we nodded.
Our question as to whether it would take until tomorrow just to take measurements and practice customer service was quickly answered.
“After everyone finishes practising customer service today, I’ve reserved a room in this hotel, so you can relax.”
“Eh!?”
“No way! is it okay!?”
“Yes, of course. I’ve gone out of my way to have you come here on your day off. It will be a good learning experience to see how real customer service works.”
While the girls were fussing over such an unexpected surprise, they immediately went to take their tuxedo measurements.
Of course, it was a woman who took the measurements.
As the measurements were taken, the tension in the room gradually eased and the girls naturally began to laugh amongst themselves.
“Hey, hey, a tuxedo has to be the right size, otherwise it’s not cool, right?”
“Yes, it does.”
“If it’s too big, even just a little bit, it’s not right.”
“But isn’t it a bit embarrassing to have your hips and breasts measured?”
“I know! I’ve never been that conscious of my hips.”
Since there were only girls in the room, the girls’ talk was intense.
“But a tuxedo is a tight-fitting suit, so the line of your hips is important too. If they’re too big, they might stand out. ……”
“Don’t worry! Everyone has good style, you’re just worrying too much.”
“I don’t care what Hina says~……”
“It just sounds sarcastic~.”
“I have a bit of a complex about it. ……”
While this conversation was going on, I finished my measurements safely, changed into a perfect tuxedo and now headed off to study customer service.
When I went to a slightly larger room, Mukai-kun was waiting for me.
Unlike his previous atmosphere, he looked dignified, as if he were a professional hotelier.
We were a little surprised by his appearance, but our tension increased.
“Well, next is customer service practice. I’m going to teach you the basics of customer service, but I’m going to be a bit strict today, so be prepared. We’re going to be taught by an army of troublemakers, and if you don’t want to be embarrassed on the day of the festival, you’ll have to do it right.”
At his words, we straightened our backs.
“First of all, you have to greet the guests when they come in. Bow firmly and say welcome. This may seem simple, but posture and tone of voice are important.”
Mukai kun actually shows us a model.
He straightens his back, bends at the waist and says ‘welcome’ in a polite and resonant voice.
His movements gave him a professional air that made it hard to believe that he was the same age as me.
“Well, let’s try it in turn. Start with Saito.”
Saito-san stepped forward with a slightly nervous look on her face.
She also bowed and said, ‘Welcome’, but her voice was a little small and anxious.
“voice is quiet. And your bow is shallow. Try to do it more firmly. The first impression the customer gets is important. One more time.”
Saito-san tried again, but her posture was still awkward.
Mukai kun corrects her posture and gives her detailed instructions on how she should move her body.
As we watched, our backs straightened up.
It was as if he were a manners instructor from somewhere.
“Next, Matsumura.”
“Yes!”
I tried to follow Mukai kun’s example, but my voice trembled with more nervousness than I had expected.
“Matsumura, be more confident. The customers expect you to greet them with a smile.”
Mukai kun’s stern words made me break out into a cold sweat, but I kept his advice in mind and started over again.
When I spoke up firmly and was conscious of my posture, Mukai-kun looked a little satisfied.
“Yes, that’s all right then. But your movements are still a little stiff. Be natural, but polite. Serving customers isn’t just a job, it’s a service, so it’s important to put your heart into it.”
After that, one by one, they were checked in the same strict manner. If they made a mistake, they were immediately pointed out and ordered to redo it again. The classmates also tried to respond to Mukai kun’s seriousness, practising over and over again.
“Customer service is not about perfection. It’s about how you make the customer feel welcome. Don’t forget that.”
He looked around at us as he said this.
We all took his words to heart with a serious look in our eyes.
When we had learned all about customer service in this way, the boys came to the hotel.
“””’Welcome!”””
