The moment the bell signaling the end of school stopped ringing, an irregular patter began to sound from outside the window.
When Achi Hotarou looked out the window, he saw the sky covered in thick, leaden clouds, and sudden rain was turning the asphalt black.
“Rain, huh?”
Hotarou muttered briefly and opened his school bag.
Inside, his trusty black folding umbrella was safely tucked away.
For someone who never failed to check the weather forecast, a sudden change in the weather like this was entirely within his expectations.
However, just then, the face of his noisy neighbor popped into his mind.
Judging by her carefree messages in the morning and her usual clumsy behavior, nine times out of ten, she probably hadn’t brought an umbrella.
If things continued like this, she would end up at a loss by the shoe rack.
Houtarou let out a small sigh, grabbed his bag, and quickly left the classroom.
As he walked down the hallway, trying to catch Seika before she left the school grounds, he was suddenly called out to from head-on.
“Hey, Houtarou. Where are you going?”
The owner of that languid voice was Misao Shiojiri.
She was a female student who was on very friendly terms with Houtarou.
“Just a bit,”
Houtarou stopped in his tracks and gave a vague reply.
Misao then stared at Houtarou with a sidelong glance and gave a dramatic shrug.
“Hmm. What is it? I mean, I guess you’ve started keeping secrets from me. I feel a little left out…”
“It’s nothing major. My neighbor seems to be in trouble.”
Facing Misao, who was acting all sulky on purpose, Houtarou confessed without hesitation.
“Your neighbor… you mean Hirugami-san?”
“Yeah.”
When Houtarou gave a short, affirmative reply, Misao’s eyes widened slightly.
Then, after casting a meaningful glance at Houtarou, she let out a small sigh and turned her back on him.
“Hmm… I see.”
As Misao started to walk away briskly, Houtarou called out to her back in a surprised tone.
“You don’t really press the issue, do you?”
“Well, if it’s what you’ve decided, Houtarou. I’ll respect that. Sort of.”
Misako waved one hand flippantly and disappeared around the corner of the hallway.
It was probably her way of being considerate.
Houtarou turned his gaze forward again and quickened his pace toward his neighbor, who was likely struggling without an umbrella.
