“Hey there, Renren! Sorry about this, calling you so late!”

As I entered the shop, Suzukita-san, sitting at a table, waved her hands vigorously at me.

Akito… wasn’t here, I guess.

I scanned the area. …Yeah. He really wasn’t anywhere to be seen.

That fact made me feel a little relieved. What a terrible childhood friend I am, I thought, hating myself again.

“Just sit down for now. I’ll treat you as thanks, okay? Let’s look at the menu?”

“…Uh, okay.”

I was so nervous, my words got stuck in my throat.

Just because Akito wasn’t here… didn’t mean the confession had failed.

Besides, Suzukita-san seemed to be in a really good mood. If that’s the case, maybe it went well after all.

Biting my lip hard, I sat down directly across from Suzukita-san.

Then she flashed a bright, cheerful smile and said,

“Hehe. Is this actually the first time Renren and I have talked alone?”

“Um… yeah, maybe…”

“Ah, really? Seriously, Renren~, you have such a cute face, you know? Your skin’s so smooth, and your hair’s so shiny. Ugh, I’m so jealous!”

While checking the menu on her smartphone app, Suzukita-san said things like that.

…Being complimented is genuinely nice. I mean, I am a girl of a certain age, and I do try to take care of my skin and hair.

But. Right now, that’s not what matters.

“…Um, Suzukita-san?”

“Hm? What is it, Renren?”

“Well… Why did you call me out…?”

My voice trembled. My heart ached like it was creaking and groaning.

…It couldn’t possibly be just because she wanted to eat with me.

In response to my question, Suzukita-san gave a thoughtful “Hmm—” before saying,

“—So, you see. Today, I confessed to Ayatacchi.”

She smiled happily, “Ehehe.”

Suzukita-san stated it matter-of-factly.

“Huh… wait, you’re not surprised? I thought Renren would be more shocked than this!”

“Th-that’s, well…”

Suzukita-san’s voice was bright and cheerful, as always.
My vision blurred. I truly hated myself for not being able to genuinely rejoice in Akito and Suzukita-san’s happiness.

But first… I had to be honest.

“…I’m sorry, Suzukita-san. Actually, I… I overheard your confession…”

“Huh, no way!? Wait—oh, right, it was right after club ended, wasn’t it?”

“Oh no,” Suzukita-san scratched her cheek, looking embarrassed.

“Hey, listen, Renren. I was surprised at myself, I just blurted it out all of a sudden. So I wasn’t thinking about the time at all. Ugh, I messed up.”

“…I’m really sorry. For eavesdropping…”

“Ah, it’s fine, it’s fine. It’s not your fault, Renren. But I’d like to know how much you heard, though.”

Suzukita-san propped her cheek on her hand, waiting for my answer.

I couldn’t look directly at Suzukita-san’s smiling face, so I averted my gaze.

“…Up until the confession part. I heard you say ‘Will you go out with me?’… I didn’t hear anything after that.”

“Hmm, I see, I see. Then I guess I’m safe, just barely though!”

Swinging her legs back and forth, Suzukita-san continued talking.

“…After school earlier. Ayatacchi said he’d study in the classroom before going home, so I was watching him while playing Enfil. And then, well—Ayata-cchi’s expression while studying so seriously was just… super cool. You know, that ‘melo’ thing?”

Ah… I get it, I thought.

Akito has a tendency to be lazy. At least since high school, he hardly ever seemed to study properly. His grades were always barely passing.

But. Maybe that’s exactly why.

The serious side profile Akito occasionally showed—it was cool above all else.

“Seeing Ayata cchi’s melo face like that, I suddenly couldn’t hold back anymore—”

Suzukita-san’s cheeks flushed faintly.

Looking just like a girl in love, Suzukita-san opened her lips. Then,

“…Before I knew it, I’d confessed. ‘I like you. Please go out with me.’”

Somehow… it felt like my heart had been shot.

I genuinely thought Suzukita-san was amazing.

I… had been hiding my true feelings all this time. Worse, I’d said so many cruel things to Akito, whom I loved so much. I’d kept up this aloof attitude, the complete opposite of how I truly felt.

So, seeing Suzukita-san able to express her feelings so honestly like that—she seemed incredibly radiant.

“…Akito, did—”

Before I knew it, those words had slipped out.

I pressed my hand tightly against my fluttering left chest. Somehow, I managed to get the rest out.

“What… did Akito say…?”

“Hmm. I asked him not to answer yet. So Ayata cchi didn’t say yes or no. Well, it’s kind of on hold, I guess.”

“Huh… I see…”

Oh, right—Suzukita-san isn’t officially Akito’s girlfriend yet.

But.

She didn’t even give me a moment to feel relieved.

“Hey, Renren. So, can we get down to business now?”

And then, Suzukita-san.

Keeping that bright smile—somehow defiantly, she curled her lips upward.

“――――Today, you see. I came to declare war on Renren.”
