From Cain’s perspective
The princess and the saint kept coming into my room every few hours—no, every few minutes.
They must be worried about my health and whether I’ve run away or something.
But there was one person who hadn’t come to see me at all.
When I looked outside through the window—which was protected by layers of magic—I saw someone who had been swinging a sword the whole time, practicing their form.
It was the knight heroine.
She’d probably been swinging that sword nonstop, from before I woke up in the morning until I went to sleep at night.
…She’ll ruin her body doing that.
That would defeat the whole purpose.
I told the Saint, who entered the room right after, to go fetch the Knight.
A few minutes after the Saint went to get her,
the Knight entered the room with a light knock, likely out of breath.
“…As for not coming to apologize for my mistake right away…”
She began with an apology right off the bat.
She started by apologizing for mistaking me for the culprit when it was the Saint and the Princess, and for not coming to apologize even after realizing her mistake.
But I don’t need an apology.
“That doesn’t matter… What are you so anxious about? Why are you training nonstop like that? At this rate, you… won’t last.”
Since it’s already obvious what I’ve been protecting, I decided to tell her directly.
Her level of anxiety is abnormal.
Increasing your daily training volume is a good thing, but overdoing it is obviously bad for both your body and your training progress.
“…You… Cain… haven’t you noticed?”
She suddenly asked me that.
“Haven’t noticed? Noticed what?”
“Didn’t you think things were going a little too smoothly?”
Her abrupt question
Going too smoothly?
Is she talking about the plan where I protect her from the shadows?
I try to recall it again.
When I helped the Saintess from the shadows,
it’s true—for some reason, a document was found that made it look as if I had hired an assassin.
And the rumor spread in an instant; everyone viewed me as an enemy. Without a shred of doubt.
Going too smoothly… huh?
No… I figured that was only natural since my popularity was already low to begin with.
I thought about that for a few seconds and fell silent, but she continued to voice her opinion.
“Didn’t it strike you as odd that we didn’t suspect a thing? I could tell from the residual magic, but there are very few Holy-attribute mages capable of killing the boss of the Assassins’ Guild. Given that Cain, who’s in our year and can wield Holy-attribute magic quite extensively, could have easily been suspected of helping the Holy Maiden. And when he protected the princess, why was the maid able to hold back Cain—who’s far stronger than any of us—all by herself… or even put up a decent fight?”
…She’s right.
Hearing her say that, it does seem like things went a little too smoothly.
“And so we arrived at a conclusion. Could it be that Cain is manipulating everyone’s thoughts? Could it be that his magic’s effect on us wore off because he was injured and weakened? But this theory was dismissed in an instant. When the princess heard about it, she said Cain looked like he genuinely had no idea. In other words, the only plausible conclusion is that a third party cast a spell to isolate Cain. They were likely using the strategy of helping us behind Cain’s back as a ruse to isolate him. That’s why I’m training now. It’s highly likely that whoever can cast spells on so many people is a formidable opponent.”
I see…
Manipulating the thoughts of everyone around him…
Probably… that guy’s…
This is getting a bit tricky.
The story is diverging from the original after all.
Was the reason they tried to isolate me because they were after my abilities and my body?
