Episode 9 – Platinum girl, anomaly

The question, which holds puzzlement, however, Anri does not answer. With her mouth forming the shape of a gentle smile, she raises her index finger and leers at me, “Shhhh”.

“….Are There something you wanted to say—-…Anri? ”

I raise my voice unintentionally. But it can’t be helped. The reason is that Anri came slowly to my side and then entered the bed where I was sleeping with a natural movement.

She slid in next to me as I reflexively backed away and snuggled up to me, pressing her soft body against mine. I look at her face, upset, to ask her what’s going on, and for some reason, I feel a tingle in my neck.

Her eyes, staring back at me, reveal a dark emotion through the platinum lashes that match her hair. The thick emotion – if I had to guess, I would say it was a strong obsession. Since our reunion, Anri had not shown any such signs, but I could sense a dangerous atmosphere from her.

I sit up, still confused. Unable to ignore the change in my dear friend, I asked Anri, who was lying on her back and looking up at me from below.

“Anri, what’s wrong? Did something happen?　I hope I’m wrong, but you don’t seem like the usual Anri.”

“Hmm, I guess something happened… Tale came back after a long time, so I just thought we should sleep together. Is something wrong? ”

“I think it’s …… strange. It is not right to come to a man’s room in the evening and casually climb into bed with him.”

The color of Anri’s face changed when he heard what I said. As if something terrible had been said her, she suddenly lost her color, her eyes widened, and her open mouth wandered.

The sudden change stunned me, and Anri said to me in a trembling voice

“…… how can you say …… such a thing so lightly? I haven’t seen my boyfrined in a long time. I’d be angry too if you said that to me. ……!”

“Eh …… lover?”

“Suddenly you’re talking like that, did you get another woman while you were out of town?　It’s not uncommon to hear of men cheating on their girlfriends and then going cold. ………… If that’s the case, I won’t forgive you.”

My mind goes blank. I’m not sure what Anri just said to me. If I am not mistaken, Anri did call herself my girlfriend?

I had no idea. If I remember correctly, there is no such thing as a girlfriend. Anri was just a childhood friend of mine who I’ve spent a lot of time with, but I don’t think she was in a romantic relationship with me.

I was more and more confused when Anri raised her eyes and flashed her eyes. It was only natural that she glared at me so hard, since I had no recollection of the fact that I was the lover Anri was talking about in the first place.

Just as I was at a loss as to how to respond, I suddenly realized something.

–I wondered if there was anything strange in our conversation.

–How on earth does Anri perceive my three months away from the city?

“Well, Anri. I know this is a strange thing to ask, but …… I hope you won’t be offended. Do you know where I was and what I was doing before we met again in Brenn today?”

I wondered if she thought my serious question was a deception. Anri sniffed in a sullen tone while her gaze remained sharp.

“What are you talking about? Of course I know. Three months ago, Tale and I defeated the Gray Wolves in the mountains together, and then we …… then………”

But for some reason, Anri stopped in mid-sentence, her face contorted as if she was trying to hold back the pain. As I worried about what was wrong, Anri’s breathing gradually quickened and sweat began to float on her face, even though it wasn’t even hot. It was clearly something out of the ordinary.

“…… Tale is, uh, in another city on a mission,…… but alone? I don’t know why that was,………… that time, Tale,…… I think,…… …… fell off a cliff and—–?”

Anri’s eyes widen as if she saw something she wasn’t supposed to see, and she grabs my shoulder, almost as if she’s hyperventilating now.

“B-But! Tale is here, then, and Tale didn’t fall off or anything, but he hasn’t been back for three months, and I thought he was already dead. …Uuuuuuu ……!”

“Anri ……! Enough, enough, enough.”

I saw Anri holding her head and beginning to groan, and I quickly pulled her body into my arms. Her thin body was completely in my chest, and now she was shaking slightly.

I feel that Anri is in danger of breaking down if I don’t hold her like this. Seeing Anri’s body frozen in my arms, I had the impression that she was like a piece of glass that can be easily broken.

The Anri I know is strong, self-possessed, and unaffected by the eyes and thoughts of others.
But I had a vision of her mental image disappearing like an illusion.

I hugged Anri tightly, who had grown quiet in my arms, and spoke softly to her.

“I’m sorry for asking you such a strange question. I won’t ask you again, so please calm down. Anri has been through a lot and is tired.”

“Y-yeah…”

“Come on, lie down. You can sleep here today. I’ll be right next to you.”

I stroked her head as if to tuck her in, and she obediently complied. Her breathing, which had been disordered, gradually becomes more even, and she closes her eyes and falls asleep as if she is exhausted.

I let out a sigh of relief and thought back to Anri’s condition up until a few minutes ago.

–It seemed that her memory was somewhat confused about the last three months since I had fallen to the bottom of the valley. If I forced her to remember, she might become unstable again. …… I’ll have to talk to the other two tomorrow with Anri out of the loop.

The way things were going, I can’t just leave it like that.

It was probably because of my absence, so I have to do something about it. I am glad that I have acquired the strength to be a member of “Sword of Wheat,” but at what cost?

I clenched my fists tightly as I realized the weight of the crime I had committed.

First of all, I checked with Ur and Rietta to find out more about Anri’s condition. I would also have to confess the mistake I had made and apologize. I may be hated by everyone, but I have no choice but to accept it.

I lay down next to Anri with my hands over my face.

–I can’t do anything right. I think I’m finally doing something useful, but then another problem arises.

When I think of the consequences of my actions, I feel like beating myself up.

But first and foremost, though, it’s Anri. If punishment is to be meted out, I will accept it maturely. But first, I have to take responsibility for Anri. My childhood friends are the most important thing to me.

I vowed to myself and closed my eyes.

I have a lot of things to think about, and I have plans for tomorrow. My mind is filled with miscellaneous things that keep popping into my head one after another, leaving seeds of anxiety in their wake.

But today, the exhaustion that has been accumulating in my mind does not allow me to escape.

Feeling Anri’s sleeping breath next to me, my consciousness gradually fades away. The thoughts in my mind fade away like bubbles, and before I know it, I am sinking into a deep sea of sleep.
