Holding Toka’s hand, we entered the sea. Since going out to the open water was dangerous, I stopped once we reached a spot where the water only came up to our thighs.
“Waaah, it’s sticky and salty!”
Toka, an indoor type, was having a terrible time with her first taste of seawater. Indeed, unlike a pool, the sea was full of quirks. With every wave, Toka’s T-shirt soaked up water faster and faster.

Beneath her clinging T-shirt, the outline of her swimsuit design faintly showed through. H-heavens, this was somehow… erotic in its own way.
“Ryo-kun, teach me how to swim.”

No, no! Somehow today I kept seeing Toka through those eyes. I really ought to be enjoying the beach properly!
“I can’t properly teach you if you keep that T-shirt on. It’s dangerous.”

She protested with an inarticulate cry. But dangerous is dangerous; I couldn’t budge on that.
“Well then, I could borrow a rubber ring. We could practise the breaststroke in the shallows…”
“Ooh! Actually, I was jealous of Kaede-san’s rubber ring”
“Well, you should’ve said so sooner.”
“I had my pride as a senior.”
“Where are you putting that pride?!”
Stubborn in all the wrong places. Fine, I’ll go get it then.
“Pffft!”
Toka suddenly covered her mouth and started laughing.
‘Wh-what’s so funny all of a sudden?’
“Actually, you can’t swim either, can you, Ryo kun? So you’re using my T-shirt as an excuse!”
“For the record, I’m actually a great swimmer! I came second in a competition when I was in primary school!”
“Eh? You’ve betrayed me.”
“Why are you acting all shocked when you’re the one who started this?”

Pulling Toka’s hands, I practised the breaststroke kick with her. I felt completely like a PE teacher.
“Wah!”
Toka, equipped with a waist float, was kicking her legs desperately. With each wave, her body bobbed up and down with the float, utterly adorable.
“Just being pulled by you makes me feel like I’m actually swimming!”
“It’s all in your head. Come on, move your legs more.”
“Ryo-kun, the Spartan training has begun.”
Rocked by the waves, I pulled Toka’s hand and moved gradually out to sea. Carefully, to stay safe. It was only waist-deep, but for Toka, it was uncharted territory.
“Hyahh…! A wave… coming…”
“It’s alright, it’s alright. I’m here.”
Her grip tightened, stronger than before. To keep from letting go, she’d somehow ended up holding my hands in a lover’s grip with both of hers.
“Right, that’s far enough. Swimming fully clothed is actually quite dangerous, you know.”
“But I’m not scared because you’re here, Ryo-kun.”
Toka murmured softly, clinging gently to my arm.
“…I never thought I’d come to the sea like this with someone,”
she said, smiling brightly.
“I guess I enjoy anywhere as long as I’m with you, Ryo-kun. Though I do prefer lazing about at home, really.”
“..That’s cheating.”
“Eh? What is?”
“If you say something like that, it’s got nothing to do with the sea anymore… I enjoy anywhere as long as I’m with Toka too.”
Touka said something so earnest that my true feelings slipped out before I could stop myself. She looked puzzled for a moment, then her cheeks flushed a soft pink.
“Then, watch me instead of the sea, okay?”
Just as she said that, a large wave crashed in with a splash. We both let out a startled ‘Wah!’ at the same time, and were spectacularly drenched from head to toe.
“Ouch, that’s salty!”
“Ahahahaha! That look on your face just now, Ryo-kun, was pathetic!”
I coughed uncontrollably and glared at Toka, who was flapping her soaked T-shirt.
“Well, you had a pretty ridiculous look on your face just now too!”
“Eh? I was just having a cute little splash in the water!”
“You mean “wave bath”, right?”
Toka grinned, seawater dripping from her hair. Her face, lit by the sun, looked genuinely happy – unfairly adorable.
“I like you, Ryo-kun.”
“Stop ambushing me like that.”
“But I just felt like saying it.”
“Even if you feel like saying it, you should hold back!”
“I couldn’t hold back, so I said it.”
“You’re just being stubborn.”
Laughing, I tapped her forehead lightly with my finger. She pouted and pressed herself snugly against my chest.
“Shall I write that in the training notes too? “Even if you feel like saying it, hold back”?”
“Muuu…”
“I need to be trained by you much, much more, Ryo-kun~”
As Toka said that, she grabbed hold of my shoulder this time!
“Go on then! Ryo-kun-go!”
“I’m being used as propellant…”
With no other choice, I tried swimming while carrying Toka. The rubber ring acted as a buffer, but we ended up pressed quite close together.
“Phew, comfy. Comfy. I wouldn’t mind not learning to swim at all like this.”
“I’ll make sure to write that down properly in the training notes, you know! Learning to swim properly!”
As we swam along bickering like that, a petite girl drifted towards us on the waves from the other side.
“The lovey-dovey police, Kagurazaka, has arrived!”
“Guh…!”
A primary schooler said that to me with a deadpan expression. that’s actually quite embarrassing.
“Onii chan, onee chan, I’m hungry!”
“Now you mention it, I want something to eat too.”
“Shall we head in for lunch? I hear summer oysters are delicious right now.”
“Oysters?”
“That’s right! They’re packed with nutrients and apparently really good for your stamina!”
Yeah, it’s just a normal conversation. Nothing weird about it, nothing to get worked up over, right?
“S-Stamina…?”
But for some reason, I heard a flustered voice from Toka behind me! I’ll say it again and again, but that was just a normal conversation, alright!
