Episode 6 – Because I decided to have lunch here too

“…… finally lunch break”

Finally, the morning classes were over and it was time for lunch break. Needless to say, I was very tired, probably because it had been a long time since I had been in class, and I couldn’t wait for my lunch break.
Naturally, as a loner, I had no one to share a meal with. That is why I spend my lunch break outside the classroom. I didn’t want to eat alone in the classroom because it would have been too miserable.
I got up from my seat with the bread and juice I bought at the convenience store in the morning and headed for the courtyard. After having lunch in the courtyard, I usually kill some time in the library by reading a novel.

“It’s so relaxing.”

This is a spot with a beautiful view but not too many people, and it is the best place I found in my first year.
As I sit on the steps, about to open a bag of bread, I hear someone’s footsteps slowly approaching me. I looked up to see Riona standing there with a lunch box and a bag of chopsticks in her hand.

“Ryoya, what are you doing here?”
“Well, it is Riona, as you can see, I’m having lunch.”

I wondered why Riona was here, but maybe she was just passing by by chance. I thought she would be satisfied with my words and walk away, but Riona sat down next to me.

“…… Umm, what are you doing here, Riona?”
“Because I decided to have lunch here too.”
“No, no, Riona has plenty of people in her class to eat with, don’t you?”

There is no merit for Riona, who is at the top of the caste, to have lunch with me. And if someone sees her with me, a person of the lowest caste, it would be a negative thing.

“I’ve made up my mind, and my sister will be here soon.”
“Eh, Reona is coming too?”

Riona uttered such a thing while operating her phone. As I recall, Reona always eats with the group members, so I wondered if it would be okay for her to come without them. As I was thinking that, Reona came in with her lunch bag.

“Sorry to keep you waiting, you two. Let’s eat right away.”
“…… seriously, you’re going to eat here?”
“Yes, of course.”

I’m not sure what to say to her. I gave up on trying to persuade her, realizing that there was nothing I could say that would help convince her.
Well, there are not many people passing by here, so there is not much worry about being seen, and it will probably be okay. As I was about to open the bag of bread, Reona stopped me.

“Ah, I made lunch for Ryoya-kun, so you don’t have to eat the bread,
“Eh!?”
“Me and onee chan worked really hard on it.”

I had thought that Riona, who happened to be passing by here, had called Reona to have lunch with her on a completely spur of the moment idea.
But if that was the case, it was obviously strange that there was a lunch box prepared for me. I can only assume that she had intended to spend her lunch break with me from the beginning.
I had never told anyone that I was having lunch at the Best Place, so how did they know where I was? No matter how much I thought about it, I could not seem to come up with an answer, and in fact, the mystery only deepened.

“I wonder if you were that surprised and happy? Well, you should try it anyway.”
“Thanks……”

I had a lot of things on my mind, but I took the lunch box from Reona for the time being. And I opened the lid and the contents were simple: hamburger steak, fried egg, fried chicken, broccoli, and white rice. I took a bite of the fried egg.

“Eh, it tastes so good!”
“I know, we’re so proud of it.”
“We worked hard on it with onee chan.”

The egg omelet was a plain looking omelet, but it tasted amazingly good. Incidentally, Reona and Riona had the same side dish in their bento boxes. I then proceeded to eat the other side dishes one after the other.

“Yeah, it’s still delicious,……, but I think the ketchup on the hamburger steak tastes a little different.”
“Yeah, I put an extra secret ingredient in the ketchup. Maybe it didn’t suit your palate.”
“Sorry about that.”

The reason for this is because it tastes like iron.
She was very adamant about not telling me what she put in it as a secret ingredient, but she did tell me that it had something to do with love, and needless to say, I was even more curious about it.
The three of us chatted for a while and finished the meal in no time. I was going to wash my chopsticks and lunch box and return them, so I tried to keep them for a while, but for some reason they refused to let me.

“Riona and I will be responsible for washing the chopsticks and lunch box, so you don’t have to worry about it.”
“I’m so sorry that I’m making you cook and wash the dishes.”
“Don’t worry, we’ll take care of it.”

In the end, I didn’t have to pay for anything because they pushed me away, and the only result was that I ate my bento for free.
