[Reisa’s POV]
At home after returning from school.
Today was a rare occasion where both my parents were home, so we had a slightly luxurious dinner.
Usually we have Western food, but today we had Japanese cuisine, with fish-centered dishes.
Even though she was raised in Paris, my mom is a pro at using chopsticks.
It’s probably because she has so many dinners, but she’s truly impressive.
Even I struggle with removing fish bones, so I’m always amazed at how a foreigner can enjoy Japanese cuisine so naturally.
Also, there was a rare guest at the dinner table today.
Mika, dressed in casual clothes instead of her maid uniform, had shed her usual plain disguise and was in “lady mode.”
This is because, according to our household policy, even though Mika works as a maid, she remains a distinct entity separate from the other servants.
It has been a long-standing tradition for us to spend meal times together as a family.
With my parents and the odd-looking Mika beside me, I felt a bit uncomfortable.
Well, at least my parents were in a good mood today, which was a relief.
“They were in a good mood because of how much your grades have improved.”
“They used to always scold me, so this was a nice change.”
“Compared to other well-off families, I think you’re being raised quite leniently.”
“…That’s true.”
It’s true that my parents don’t impose excessive restrictions on my education.
Because of that, I’m often criticized at family gatherings, but I don’t care.
Especially my dad, who is super lenient with me, so I’m grateful that I can live a fairly protected and free-spirited life.
And for some reason, I glared at the beautiful girl in the room.
“What?”
“You’re really beautiful when you act normal.”
“I hear that a lot…but when you say it, it just sounds like sarcasm.”
“Hehe, I didn’t say you’re cuter than me.”
Nishiho Mika is a beautiful woman with well-defined features.
When she wears a low-cut dress, her good looks are complemented by her great figure.
Since her parents hired a maid while living overseas, she is also half-Japanese like me.
Her hair is brown, so it doesn’t stand out, but her eyes are a beautiful jade color, and her fair skin gives her a appearance that is vastly different from that of a typical Japanese person.
However, for the sake of not standing out, she uses colored contact lenses and makeup to disguise herself as a plain Japanese girl.
In the end, she even mastered acne makeup and deliberately makes her face look dirty every day.
Just to clarify, I didn’t force her to do it.
She started wearing colored contact lenses on her own around the time she entered middle school, partly due to her declining vision.
She seems to enjoy the disguise makeup, so I don’t stop her.
As for me, it’s easier to keep her around if she dresses modestly rather than looking like a foreigner.
Well, if you ask me if I have any thoughts on it, that’s another matter.
“By the way, lately you’ve been really into acne makeup, haven’t you? You don’t have to change your face that much to avoid being recognized. Besides, Nagisa already knows who you are.”
“No. There are rude men who stare at people’s faces.”
“What a creep.”
“….Hmph !”
“?”
Mika, who usually never breaks her expression, suddenly burst out laughing with a strange face, which surprised me.
It wasn’t just rare.
It felt like I hadn’t seen the real Mika in about ten years.
Then, Mika quietly moved her mouth and muttered something I couldn’t hear.
“It’s about your favorite guy.”
“What !? What did you say !?”
“Nothing, really.”
“…”
I don’t know where she picked it up, but this girl’s strange talent is a headache.
I don’t understand why I can’t hear her at this distance.
She’s competent as a maid, but to be honest, she’s also creepy.
On top of that, because of her sharp ears, everything I say, even if it’s just a small mutter, is heard.
She’s a pain.
After teasing me, Mika suddenly turned serious.
“Speaking of which, a few days ago, when the English quiz results were returned, Edano Tsukushi and Takagi Rio were arguing in the hallway—”
The English quiz results were returned just the other day, so it’s still fresh in my memory.
I didn’t score as well as I expected, so I was a bit disappointed.
Mika began to recount what happened that day.
Apparently, on that day, Tsukushi and Takagi kun had a heated argument in the hallway, and Mika had witnessed the entire incident.
She had been preoccupied with other things and had completely forgotten about it until now.
Upon hearing this, I vaguely recalled hearing such rumors.
On that day, Tsukushi had been unusually downcast, so I was more concerned about that than anything else.
In fact, he was back to his usual self after school, so I thought the matter was closed.
But after hearing Mika’s story, I clenched my fist.
“I see. No wonder Tsukushi is so motivated.”
“I doubt those two realized I was listening in.”
“Well, that’s understandable. You have ears like a bat.”
“I’ve been refining my skills by making sure not to miss a single sound of what Lady Reisa is doing in her bedroom at night.”
“I’m not doing anything, but what are you listening to?”
It’s not a lie to hide my embarrassment.
Engaging in such behavior in the bedroom is…really rare.
And I’ve never made a sound.
Thinking that I’m always moaning is just from watching too many videos.
When I narrowed my eyes in genuine disgust, Mika apologized softly, “That was a slip of the tongue” and looked away.
This makes it seem like I’m the one doing perverted things every day.
Even if she apologizes, it still pisses me off.
“Anyway, Takagi Rio is seriously creepy. I want to beat him up and make him cry instead of Tsukushi.”
“Even you, Lady Reisa, that’s impossible. Even someone like that has real academic achievements.”
“There are people like that, aren’t there? People who are just smart in terms of grades.”
Grades do not equal intelligence.
Sure, there’s some correlation, but I don’t think you can judge someone’s intelligence based on their grades alone.
No matter how good their grades are, people who try to lord it over others are out of the question.
They’re just stupid in terms of how they live their lives.
Are there really smart people who act like jerks?
Because bullying is just a negative burden you put on yourself when your flaws are exposed.
I think truly smart people don’t make enemies.
I think people who are kind to others, even if it’s fake, and navigate society smoothly are much smarter.
I started thinking that way after entering high school.
Still, he’s really annoying.
Just when I thought I’d gotten rid of Kako, now this clingy stalker guy shows up.
The person I like is too popular, and it’s painful.
“Can’t we do something about that person?”
“Are we going to kill again?”
“…You’re talking like there’s a precedent. When did I ever ask you to kill someone?”
Please don’t say such unpleasant things.
At most, I had that annoying girl chased away.
“I want to make him look really stupid.”
“Haha, you’re so mean, Lady Reisa.”
“My personality has always been bad. I don’t care about anyone except the person I like.”
“Do you not care about Amakusa Nagisa either?”
“…Didn’t you hear me say ‘anyone except the person I like’?”
“Oh, you’re so cute with your tsundere attitude.”
“Die.”
I threw the stuffed animal on the desk, but it was caught at lightning speed and put to bed.
Today, I’m definitely going to sleep with that rabbit.
“How about this? Tomorrow during homeroom, let’s cheer on Takagi Rio and get him in a good mood. Then, we’ll just let things take their course…let’s have that person wear a maid outfit on the day of the event too. Being the only one in drag, she’ll probably get some weird looks on the day.”
“Oh ! Mika, you’re really bad.”
“Not as bad as Lady Reisa.”
Takagi Rio is the type who gets carried away easily.
If Mika can get the class on board and call on Takagi to play the maid role, he’ll probably go along with it.
He might even be happy to be the center of attention.
And watching it would make me feel a little better.
It seems he was even mocking Nagisa, so he deserves some karma.
On the day, I’ll burn that embarrassing sight into my memory.
Another thing to look forward to.
“Mika, that’s why they say you’re smart.”
“Are you complimenting me?”
“Yes.”
“Hahaha, I’ll do anything for Lady Reisa.”
“…..Stop saying that in that outfit.”
As Mika stood up, held the hem of her dress, and bowed, I grimaced.
In casual clothes, she just doesn’t feel like a maid.
They say clothes make the man, and I really feel that’s true.
