After finishing our shopping, we got back in the car and headed for a certain place.
Seagulls flew in the sky, and between the sky and the sea stretched a cape known as “Lovers’ Cape.”
This cliffside observation deck, once the site of a tragic love story, is now a popular spot for lovers to pledge their love.
Before us lay the Japan Sea, stretching endlessly into the distance, its deep blue waters stretching as far as the eye could see.
The setting sun was slowly sinking toward the small island silhouettes on the distant horizon.
The sky, where orange and indigo blended together, reflected on the water’s surface, and the entire scene felt like something out of a dream.
“…This is truly…beautiful.”
Towa san murmured softly, her eyes narrowed in awe at the breathtaking view.
Watching her profile beside me, I gently stroked my chest.
—-It’s so nice that the weather is good.
The winters in the Hokuriku region are often stormy. Being able to share such a peaceful sunset with her felt like a coincidence, yet also a miracle.
At that moment, a cold sea breeze blew through.
“Itsuki san…”
Towa san whispered my name softly and gently placed her hand on my arm.
Then, without hesitation, she leaned her body against mine.
A soft warmth spread through my skin, which had been freezing.
“Now I’m warm.”
“Yeah…..me too.”
Her silvery hair fluttered gently in the breeze at the edge of my vision.
I, a foolish man, was more captivated by her profile standing next to me than by the breathtaking view before me.
“…Are we going to lock this fence together?”
As far as the eye could see, countless padlocks were hung on the fence.
Towa san one shimmered in the sea breeze, like a testament to the love of couples.
“Yeah. They say that if we do that, we’ll be together forever…”
“That’s lovely. Even if it’s just a superstition, I like it. I want to believe it.”
Towa san said this with a slight blush on her face.
Her smile glowed softly in the light of the sunset.
“Itsuki san, do you have a lock?”
“Of course.”
I quietly took out a small golden padlock from my pocket.
Seeing it glisten in the sea breeze, Towa san’s eyes widened—and then she smiled softly.
“Then…let’s lock it together.”
We both placed our hands on the fence and locked it.
With a small but definite “click” the padlock closed securely.
At that moment, I felt something warm and comforting deep in my chest.
—With this person, I can believe in the future. I truly believe that.
“I love you, Towa san.”
“Yes. I love you too, Itsuki san.”
Having exchanged our feelings, we turned our backs to the fence and began to walk slowly.
At that moment, something caught my eye as we were leaving: a metal plate.
It read:
[Old keys are removed and carefully stored.
Love also requires regular maintenance.
In a few years, we will install new keys and renew our vows of love.]
After reading it, we looked at each other.
Then, without saying a word, we both smiled and nodded.
—I’m sure, no, I’m absolutely certain we’ll come back again.
We were already looking forward to that day.
“Hey, Itsuki san…”
Towa san whispered softly.
“…Are you leaving already?”
Her voice was tinged with reluctance and a hint of petulance.
“…Let’s go. To the hotel.”
When I replied, Towa san lowered her eyes for a moment, then looked up and smiled.
“Yes…”
Her smile was modest yet somehow sensual, and I couldn’t help but hold my breath.
Then she wrapped her arm around mine without hesitation. Her cool fingertips gradually regained their warmth. It wasn’t just a gesture to ward off the cold.
It was a quiet determination to share this night together.
The sky began to turn indigo, and the afterglow of the sunset flickered faintly beyond the sea.
The city lights began to blur in the distance, and the wind grew slightly colder.
But in our hearts, a light that would never fade was certainly burning.
Tonight, we could spend this night alone, without hesitation.
