The dry, scratchy sound of chalk echoed through the silent classroom.

While the middle-aged math teacher scribbled complex equations on the blackboard, Seika Hirugami’s gaze was fixed entirely elsewhere.

It was the profile of Houtarou Achi, taking notes at the desk next to hers.

Just watching him stare intently at the blackboard and move his mechanical pencil across the paper made her heart tighten with a sweet, aching sensation deep inside.

The faint scent of his refreshing shampoo drifting over to her further clouded Seika’s judgment.

She wanted to talk to him. She wanted to speak to him right now.

However, she couldn’t very well start chatting openly during class, and Seika’s frustration was reaching its limit.

Seika glanced around to make sure no one was watching and secretly pulled out her smartphone from under her desk.

She opened the messaging app “NYAIN” and quickly typed a message into Houtarou’s chat window.

“Achi-kun, I’m bored. I’m hungry.”

She also sent a sticker of a dog character lying on the floor.

Clutching her smartphone from behind her desk, Seika waited for a reply, her invisible tail wagging with anticipation.

But even after five minutes, then ten, the “Read” notification still didn’t appear on the screen.

She glanced furtively at her neighbor. Houtarou hadn’t moved a muscle and was calmly continuing to pay attention to the lecture.

Of course. He’s such a serious guy—there’s no way he’d be fiddling with his smartphone during class.

(Ugh! He’s not replying!)

A whirlwind of anxiety suddenly began to swirl inside Seika’s head.

Maybe sending him a personal message during class was just a nuisance to him.

Maybe he found her clingy, attention-seeking attitude to be a burden.

(Oh no. Sending him a “NYAIN” during class—that must’ve been totally creepy!)

Having pushed herself past her limits all on her own, Seika slumped face-down on her desk, her head hanging limply.

Her invisible dog ears flattened completely against her head, and she was enveloped in a sense of despair as if the world were ending.

Unable to focus on anything, she sat there until the bell rang, mercilessly signaling the end of class.

“Attention!”

She stood up at the teacher’s command and sat back down.

Seika remained dejected, glaring resentfully at the black screen of her smartphone lying on the desk.

Then, she heard the sound of someone rummaging through a bag from the seat next to her, and out of the corner of her eye, she saw Houtarou take out his smartphone.

Seika’s heart clenched.

He checked the screen and let out a short sigh.

Then, with quick finger movements, he began typing something.

Immediately afterward, Seika’s smartphone buzzed briefly.

Her shoulders jerked, and she timidly flipped the screen over.

“You really need to pay attention in class.”

Just one sentence—a dry string of text with no emojis or stickers.

Yet, there was no cold, dismissive tone of annoyance in it; rather, it seemed to exude a slightly exasperated, clumsy kindness.

(Phew. I got scolded, but he’s so sweet.)

In an instant, a goofy grin spread across Seika’s face.

Her ears, which had been flattened against her head, perked up, and her invisible tail wagged so violently from side to side it looked like it might snap.

“Achi-kun, I’m sooo sorry. I’ll pay attention next time, nyo.”

“Stop with the weird speech patterns. Want me to let you look at my notes?”

“Huh!? Really!? I loooove you, Achi-kun!”

“Don’t shout. And for that matter, try thinking for yourself a little.”

Though he scolded her with a look of exasperation, Houtarou slid his notebook over to Seika’s desk.

That tsundere-style kindness sent Seika’s love meter skyrocketing.

In a corner of the noisy classroom during break time, the innocent gal continued to sweetly squirm in delight all by herself once again.
