The week began with the start of the regular exams before the cultural festival.

The exams were spread over five days, with one subject per day.

Tests were held in the morning, with no classes in the afternoon; school ended just before lunch break.

It was lucky for me that the memorization subjects were all scheduled in the first half.

That meant I could study for my weak subjects, math and physics, with Nanase after the exams were over.

“How did it go, Kurose-kun?”

“Um… not too bad, I guess?”

“Let’s grade it ourselves. That’ll put your mind at ease, right?”

“Y-yeah, you’re probably right.”

After the morning tests ended, Nanase and I stayed behind in the classroom until the official dismissal time to grade our papers and study.

Based on our self-scoring, I found I’d scored around 60 to 70 percent on the memorization subjects from the first half of the schedule.

“Sixty-five points… barely passed?”

“That’s amazing, Kurose-kun.”

“What did you get, Nanase?”

“I think I only got two questions wrong?”

“T-two questions!? So 96%?”

“Yeah. Not 100% sure, but definitely over 90%?”

“You’re amazing…”

I was stunned by Nanase’s brilliance.

“Huh? You guys… grading yourselves?”

While we were comparing answers, Shiraishi spoke up.

“Oh, Shiraishi. You were still here too?”

“Yeah. Math’s tomorrow, right? There’s a part I don’t quite get, so I promised to get help from friends who can do it.”

“Huh.”

“Kurose, what did you get? Social Studies?”

“S-sixty-five.”

“What? No way.”

Shiraishi’s expression turned dead serious upon hearing my score.

“Wh-what? You got lower than me?”

“No, I got 72.”

“…What the hell. That’s higher than me.”

“Seriously? I can’t believe we’re only 7 points apart. That’s kinda shocking.”

“You’re totally underestimating me.”

“Well, your face just screams ‘guy who can’t study’.”

“What kind of prejudice is that?”

“Hey—”

While we were having that conversation, Nanase looked over at Shiraishi.

“You need something, Shiraishi-san?”

“Hm? Need? I just saw you two here and thought I’d say hi.”

“If you don’t need anything, could you please go over there?”

“…Hm? What should I do?”

After pretending to think for a moment, Shiraishi said.

“Fine, but on one condition.”

“A condition?”

“Nanase, you’re good at studying, right? Teach me math. Then I’ll leave right away.”

“…Why do I have to do that…?”

“It’s not like it’ll hurt you. If you won’t teach me, I might just study here.”

With that, Shiraishi took the seat next to mine.

Nanase glared at me fiercely.

“W-well, Nanase… um, if you don’t mind… why not teach Shiraishi too…?”

“…Kurose-kun?”

“W-well… your teaching is really good, so I think Shiraishi would understand quickly… Once you’re done teaching… Shiraishi will go somewhere else, right?”

“Yeah. If you teach me properly.”

“…Alright. If Kurose-kun says so.”

Somehow Nanase put away her spear, and I breathed a sigh of relief.

After that, the time began for Shiraishi and me to have Nanase teach us the math material.

Shiraishi, being taught by Nanase, looked at her with admiration at how easy her explanations were to understand.

“Wow. That’s amazing, Nanase-san. I totally got it right away. Are you really good at teaching?”

“Not really.”

“You’re way better at teaching than Tanabe. Right, Kurose?”

“Yeah. Nanase really is great at teaching.”

“You’re lucky to have such a cute and smart girlfriend, Kurose. Honestly, she’s too good for you.”

“Shut up. Mind your own business.”

“Well then, I’ll be going as promised. Thanks for teaching me, Nanase-san. Sorry for interrupting your alone time~”

Shiraishi waved flutteringly and walked away.

As I stared blankly at her retreating back, I felt eyes on me and turned forward.

Shiraishi was staring intently at me.

“Kurose-kun?”

“G-gotta get back to studying…! Not much time left before dismissal…!!”

I immediately grabbed my pen and turned to my textbook.

The next day was the dreaded math test.

Before the test, students could be seen frantically cramming formulas into their heads.

I reviewed everything Nanase had taught me.

After finishing most of my review, I happened to notice Aiba looking surprisingly relaxed.

“You seem pretty relaxed, Aiba.”

“Hm? Oh. Yeah, I guess so.”

“You’re good with math?”

“Hm? Nah, I’m screwed.”

“…You’re screwed, and you’re not doing anything about it?”

“It’s too late to do anything now anyway.”

“…I see.”

“Ren. Acceptance is key in life. Sometimes it’s better to accept your fate without fighting it.”

“…Is that so?”

It seemed someone else here had reached the stage of “acceptance,” having passed through panic and anxiety.

Leaving my friend behind, who was gazing at the other students with a look of enlightenment, I repeated the solution method Nanase had taught me once more.
