Later, I learned from the news that the incident where explosives were brought onto that train likely involved a left-wing extremist group.
That group apparently posted a claim of responsibility online and is currently being investigated by the police.
I thought that would be the end of the matter, but it wasn’t.
Two weeks later, just as memories of the incident were starting to fade, police officials came to my house.
“You’re Kurose Ren , right?”
“You were at the scene of that train bomb incident two weeks ago, weren’t you?”
“We’d like to ask you a few questions.”
The ones who came to my house were a female detective and two of her subordinate officers.
I was questioned by the three of them inside my home.
It didn’t seem like they suspected me of being an accomplice to the perpetrators.
The police had already identified the perpetrator and the motive, and it seemed a mass arrest operation was imminent, including members of the group involved in the incident.
“We’re talking to you like this to create measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. Would you cooperate? Could you tell us in detail about the situation at the time?”
I told the female detective in detail about the situation at the time.
After hearing my account, the female detective looked at me with admiration.
“You’re amazing, you know. That’s some serious insight. Finding a bag with a bomb inside? Normally, if someone left a bag behind, you’d just leave it alone.”
“…Well, that man seemed suspicious.”
“Hmm. How exactly did he seem suspicious?”
“Well… his behavior was kind of… erratic…”
Answering her questions while hiding the fact that I could see the Grim Reaper was incredibly nerve-wracking.
If I told her the truth, she’d definitely think I was crazy.
Worse, she might suspect drug use and I’d end up under investigation myself.
I answered the female detective’s questions carefully, trying to avoid any contradictions.
“I see, I see. I understand. Thank you for telling me, Kurose-kun.”
“No…”
“Still, you did a great job. Impressive insight. If you hadn’t noticed the bomb, it could have been a major incident with casualties. Preventing that was thanks to your precise actions. I reviewed the surveillance footage from that time, and you were remarkably calm.”
“N-no…”
“If I were you, I probably wouldn’t have noticed the bomb. Even if someone’s forgotten item was left on a seat, I wouldn’t think to look inside it.”
“Uh, yeah…”
“You’re really amazing. You didn’t hesitate. You checked inside the bag as if you knew something was there from the start.”
“Um…”
I looked at the female detective.
“Are… are you suspecting me?”
“No, not at all. Like I said before, I already know the culprit, the motive, and the group involved. Right now, I’m tracing the bomb’s source and have a pretty good idea where it came from. There’s nothing suspicious about you whatsoever, and I’m not doubting you at all.”
“…Is this the pattern where you say that to put me at ease, but you’re actually suspecting me?”
“Ha ha ha”
The female detective laughed heartily.
“You’re funny. That kind of thing only happens in dramas. Besides, if we were investigating you, we wouldn’t have barged into your home without a warrant. The reason I disclosed some information about the case is precisely because I know you have no connection whatsoever to the perpetrator.”
“Th-then… is that all?”
“Yes. I’ve stayed a bit too long.
I suppose we should be going now.”
The three of them left the house.
After the two patrol officers had gone out first, the female detective, who had stayed inside until last, looked at me and said.
“Thank you for your cooperation. Thank you, Kurose-kun.”
“Yes.”
“And… just one last thing.”
The female detective suddenly moved closer to me and whispered in my ear.
“You can see them, can’t you?”
“Eh…?”
While I stood there dumbfounded, the female detective gave a light laugh, waved her hand flutteringly, and walked away.
Death gods are everywhere.
Go to any busy intersection and you’ll likely spot one. Once, I even saw one sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car nearby.
Death gods are on screens too.
During an online livestream, one appeared behind an activist performing a dangerous stunt.
Later, I saw a news article about that activist dying during the broadcast.
Since then, I’ve researched Death Gods extensively online. What I’ve come to believe is certain: I’m not the only one who can see them.
Most online information about Death Gods is either fictional or related to that popular anime. But I’ve also found traces left by others who seem to see them, like me.
It’s not many, but it appears there are others who can see Death Gods besides me.
Thinking that gives me a little reassurance.
Of course, they probably live hiding the fact that they see Death, just like me.
If you started saying you could see Death, people would just think you’d lost your mind or suspect you were on drugs.
So, like me, they probably live without telling anyone about Death, saving people destined to die or abandoning them.
“You can see them, can’t you?”
Was that female detective referring to the grim reapers?
Could she see them too, just like me?
At the very least, she seemed to know more about them than I did.
I wanted to ask her all about the grim reapers, but unfortunately, I had no idea how to contact her.
