The sports festival ended in victory for the white team to which I belong, and I was on my way home before everyone else.

This was, of course, because I had someone waiting for me.

“Sakine-chan, sorry to keep you waiting. Then, let’s go home.”

I called out to Sakine-chan, who was standing quietly by herself in front of the school gate waiting for me, and she welcomed me with a big smile on her face.

“Onii chan! I’ve been waiting for you~!”

Sakine-chan firmly grasped my hand as she answered energetically.

The warmth of her small hand is somehow comforting.

We walked slowly from the school towards home.

“How was the sports festival? Did you have fun?”

“Yes! Both onee chan and onii chan worked really hard and were really cool! Especially onii chan last relay! You were so fast!”

“Thank you.”

Sakine-chan said innocently and waved her hands around excitedly.

I was embarrassed, but her words reminded me of the time of the relay.

The afternoon competitions finally reached their climax and the final relay was about to begin.

The sports ground is filled with a strange feverish atmosphere.

The red and white teams, the yellow and blue teams, their respective cheering squads raise their voices, and cheers echo from across the finish line.

If we, the white team, win here, the upset victory will be decided. It’s a battle we can’t lose no matter what.

“Finally, it’s time, Hikaru.”

“Let’s decide here.”

The first and second runners are in charge of the first year, the second year the third and fourth runners, and the third year the fifth and sixth runners, with Ryuki as the third runner and me as the fourth runner.

The first runners line up at the starting line and the teacher holding the pistol steps forward.

Everyone gasps for breath, and the tension builds up quickly.

—Bang!

The sound of the pistol echoes across the sports field and the first runners start running in unison.

With dust in the air and the sound of footsteps echoing violently, it is the red team that takes the lead. They were followed by the yellow, white and blue groups.

The cheering groups of the other teams quieted down for a moment at the lead, but soon raised their voices again.

“Don’t lose! We can still go!”

My heart starts to beat faster. It’s not time to rush yet.

I concentrate all my attention while keeping an eye on my companions from behind.

At the moment the baton is passed to the second runner, the red team gradually catches up and lines up with the yellow team in front.

As the distance between the runners closes in on each other and the whole ground erupts, the runners wave their arms in the air and run as fast as they can.

There was almost no gap between the first-placed red team and the yellow team, and the spectators were sweating their hands as they did not know which team was going to win the race.

When the baton was passed to Ryuki, he overtook the yellow group in line and arrived exactly behind the red group.

Finally, it was my turn.

“Please…!”

I shout in my mind and catch my breath.

I stretch out my hand and receive the baton from him with all my might.

“Hikaru, go!”

The cheering voices around me reach my ears.

But now I concentrate all my attention on my legs, powering around the corners of the track and aiming for the red runners I can see in front of me.

‘I’ll catch up…!’ I tell myself, and speed up even more.

My body was nearing its limit, whether it was due to my lack of exercise or the fact that I had been outside all day under the blazing sun, but my legs kept pushing forward, determined not to be beaten.

As we entered the last straight, the gap between us and the red group was minimal.

I kicked the ground as hard as I could, and exerted my last ounce of strength. The cheers around me roared in my ears and adrenaline rushed through my body.

And I finally lined up with the white runners. As we raced shoulder-to-shoulder, I handed the baton to the fifth runner, my senior.

“Please!”

And then, the nameless senior left the runners in the red group behind, and the sixth runner, the senior, cut the finishing tape with ease.

“Yes-!!!”

My friends run up to me at once and gather around me.

Amidst the cheers, hugs and handshakes exchanged one after another, I was on a runner’s high, or perhaps I was just looking up at the sky with a blank stare.

“Do re mi fa solacido, do sillaso famire do re mi fa solacido! we’re going out without telling anyone!~”

While Sakine-chan was happily singing a song from a certain programme and heading home like that, a familiar voice was heard from behind her from behind.

“Who are you not telling?”

I turned around and there was Hina standing there with her arms crossed in a dignified stance

I and Sakine-chan both looked at each other to share the feeling of being in trouble, but the festival was already behind us.

Then we were scolded.

▼Sakine’s diary▼

Today, I went to see Onii chan and onee chan’s school’s sports day without them.

It was cool to see both onee chan running and onii chan doing his best in the high place!

I also got to see onii chan and onee chan holding hands.

Sakine could be a cameraman!

But I forgot to eat my lunch at noon, and I was so sad that onii chan found out about it.

But we ate our lunch together.

I asked onii chan to keep it a secret from onee chan by using the photo that Sakine took, but on the way back home, onee chan found out.

She was angry

But she forgave me when I told her I would give her the photos that Sakine took.

I hope the three of us can get a photo again next time.

I’ll show it to teacher again next time!
