Episode 1 

“My name is Alice. Nice to meet you.”

My first encounter with Alice was very sudden.

One day, out of the blue, my father brought her home.

He told me that she was going to be my sister from today, and that was all.

 (Her hair is silver, and she is so beautiful….so such a girl really exists.)

I still remember how confused I was at the time.

I couldn’t believe that such a beautiful girl could be my sister.

“What are you doing? Hidetaka, you too, hurry up and say hello to her.”

“Ah, yeah. N-nice to meet you, Alice.”

I managed to say hello, but it still didn’t feel real.

I think I’m dreaming. I think I was thinking about that in my foggy mind.

“Dad, what do you mean….Alice is going to be my sister?”

I think now that I asked that question in a very insensitive way.

Even though she’s about to become a family member, there must be something going on with the girl whom my father took in.

I was too young to realize this, but my father was even more insensitive than I was.

“Yeah, I was friends with Alice’s father since we were in school. But he died in an accident the other day, along with Alice’s mother. Since she had no other relatives, I decided to take her in. From now on, you two should get along well with each other. You are going to be brother and sister.”

He said this in front of a child who had just lost her parents.

Or perhaps he was even boastful. My mother had a similar expression on her face and nodded in satisfaction.

“I’ve always wanted a daughter, and to have such a lovely one, I’m so lucky !”

“Like their looks, those two were extremely capable. When we met before, they boasted that their daughter was a very bright girl, but I can only hope that this was a statement without parental favoritism.”

“Well, really !?”

“Yeah…..to be honest, I don’t think we can expect much from Hidetaka. If Alice can take over, our family will be in good hands.”

“That’s great ! Then I have to give you some lessons right away ! Come see me right away. If you can do what Hidetaka couldn’t do, then I can finally boast to those around me…”

The conversations flying over my head were terrible.

A couple of look-alikes. The word fits now.

It was the conversation of grown-ups who don’t care about their children and only care about their own pride and dignity.

For me, it was something I was already used to, and I didn’t think anything of it, but it must’ve been different for Alice.

I shook my body and quietly bowed my head once again.

“…..Nice to meet you.”

I didn’t know what kind of expression Alice had on her face at that moment.

She had just lost her parents, had been taken in by a stranger, and was listening to a conversation filled with malicious intent.

I didn’t know, and I didn’t understand anything.

“Yeah…..”

I nodded to Alice’s words. I was the only one nodding to Alice’s words.

I just felt sorry for that.

So–

“Ah…..”

I found myself taking Alice’s hand.

“We’re going to go play for a bit !”

And then I ran out of the house.

I could hear my parents’ voices after a while, but it didn’t matter.

If she had stayed there, she would have looked gloomy for a long time.

“U-um.”

“My name is Hidetaka. I’m going to be your brother from today onward !”

I was very happy to see that Alice was still running along with me as I pulled on her hand.

That helped a lot, but I was already out of breath because I was talking while running.

Although I had taken some lessons, I still didn’t have much stamina, and most of all, my heart was pounding because I had ignored my parents for the first time.

I was sure they would be very angry with me when I got home. But I don’t care about that.

“But I still don’t know anything about you. So, tell me about yourself ! A lot !”

I just didn’t want to see the girl who was going to be my little sister looking so gloomy.

That was more than enough for me to defy my parents.

“Ah….y-yes.”

At that moment, I was just happy that even though she was puzzled, she still looked up and nodded her head surely while looking at me.
