After leaving Okochi Sanso, we continued sightseeing in Arashiyama. The combination of the setting sun and the Wataratsuki Bridge was fantastic and very beautiful.
“Shall we go to Grandpa and Grandma’s house now?”
“It’s in Katsura, right?”
“Yes, so it shouldn’t take too long to get there.”
Katsura, like Arashiyama, is located in Kyoto City’s Nishikyo Ward, so it is quite close to here. We returned the kimono we had rented at a rental store near Saga-Arashiyama station. I was too embarrassed to say that it was a shame that I would not be able to see Kano san in her kimono.
“There are two Arashiyama stations relatively close to each other, so it’s really confusing.”
“I hear that many people make mistakes because of that.”
It is really easy to make a mistake because there are two stations named Arashiyama, one on Hankyu Electric Railway and the other on Keifuku Electric Railway. It would be a complete trap for tourists.
There are even stations in Kyoto that have been renamed, such as Gion-Shijo Station and Kiyomizu-Gojo Station, because of the number of tourists who make the mistake of getting on the wrong train.
We boarded the train at Arashiyama Station on the Hankyu Line and got off at Katsura Station after an eight-minute ride. As we walked out of the east exit of Katsura Station toward our destination, Kano san opened her mouth.
“Wow, Katsura is pretty rich in nature.”
“The Katsura River and the mountains make it a great place to live.”
“The atmosphere here is totally different from Tokyo.”
“By the way, there are many commercial facilities in front of the station where we are now, but a little further away, there is a residential area with a calm atmosphere.”
We continued walking slowly, talking like this. After walking for a while, we finally saw our destination. I pressed the intercom of a house with the nameplate [Ichinose] on it.
“Ichinose here, who’s calling?”
“Ah, Grandpa. It’s me, Yuito.”
“Oh, Yuito. In a moment.”
From the other end of the intercom came the voice of an old man speaking in Kyoto dialect. It had been a while since I had heard his voice, but he seemed to be in good health. The front door opened and out came Grandpa.
“Long time no see, haven’t you grown a little taller than before?”
“Unfortunately, I haven’t grown very much.”
Grandpa asks me if I’ve grown up every time I see him, but since I’m already 17 years old, my growth period is almost over, so I don’t think he can expect much more from me.
“Ayato is not here?”
“He’s at home, he’s sick with a summer cold, so he won’t be here today.”
“Oh, that’s what Ayako said.”
Grandpa said that with a regretful look on his face. I guess he wanted to see my brother too because he doesn’t get to see him very often.
Even though my older brother was very harsh towards me, he was loved by my grandpa and grandma because he behaved properly and politely. Couldn’t you be a little more kind to me?
“…..By the way, who is the tall beautiful woman next to you?”
“Oh, this is …….”
He finally noticed Kano san’s presence. Kano san interrupts me as I try to explain to Grandpa and says something outrageous.
“Nice to meet you, my name is Yuuki Kano, I’m Yuito’s fiancée.”
“Eh, Yuito’s fiancée !?”
“K-Kano san. What are you talking about all of a sudden !?”
Both grandpa and I shouted at the suddenness of the situation. How can you suddenly tell such a terrible lie to someone you just met for the first time?
“Grandma, this is some serious situation. Yuito has brought a very beautiful fiancée.”
“Ah, hold on a minute.”
Grandpa didn’t even hear me and went inside the house at a tremendous speed. He must have misunderstood.
“Why are you talking so much nonsense?”
“I’m sorry, it just slipped.”
“No, no, no, I’m sure you did it on purpose.”
“Well, it doesn’t matter. It’ll be true in a few years anyway.”
Kano san didn’t seem to be sorry at all, but rather spoke with a relaxed expression. I just have a feeling it’s going to be a hassle. As I was thinking about this, the front door suddenly opened and Grandma came out.
“Yuito chan, is it true that you brought your fianceé?”
“It was Grandpa’s misunderstanding…….”
“Look, there’s a beautiful woman next to Yuito.”
“We’ll have to make red rice tonight.”
“I can’t wait to see my great-grandchildren.”
Grandpa and grandma were both in high spirits and must not have heard what I was saying. The reason is that they are so full of imagination.
I mean, Kano san, quit rubbing your belly with a meaningful expression on your face right now. It might add fuel to the fire even if it’s just a misunderstanding.
Needless to say, it took a tremendous amount of time and effort to clear up the misunderstanding with Grandpa and Grandma, who were excitedly imagining the birth of two great-grandchildren.
