After locking the door tightly, we left the house and started traveling by bus to Waseda University. The bus was crowded, but we were lucky to be able to sit down.
“I usually commute to school by motorcycle, so it’s a bit new for me to take the bus.”
“I guess it’s easier on a bike because there’s no waiting time or anything.”
“Well, rainy days are the worst because there’s no roof. Also, you’re using honorifics.”
“……Ah, sorry.”
When Kano san pointed it out to me, I apologized. Normally, Kano san and I never speak in a casual manner, so if I’m not conscious of it, I end up using honorific language.
“Now that I think about it, I think Kano san used Kujo as her last name when registering for the open campus, but if someone were to mention that, how would you explain that?”
“I think I should just say that we are married and have the same last name?”
“No, no, no, you say that as if it were a matter of course, but of course that’s wrong. It will definitely be troublesome.”
Kano san started saying something outrageous, and I couldn’t help but raise my voice. Well, we’re both sophomores in high school and 17 years old, so we can’t be a married couple.
“Again with the honorifics.”
“…..That’s because Kano san says strange things.”
“Then why don’t we be twin siblings instead of husband and wife?”
“Well then…”
If we are supposed to be sister and brother, it is not unnatural for both of us to have the surname Kujo.
“But if we’re supposed to be sisters and brothers, wouldn’t it be strange for you to call me by my last name?”
“It does feel strange to call my sister that, but…”
“Then, from now on, you can call me by my first name.”
Kano san started saying such things with a smile on her face. As expected, there is resistance to do it so casually, but I will try to change.
“Well, let’s set it up as cousins of the same age. In that case, it wouldn’t be so strange to use [san].”
“Hmm, I was thinking of making a change from couples to siblings, but if Yuito said something like that.”
“But calling you by your first name is a little too much.”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t accept any other setting than husband and wife or sister and brother.”
Apparently, Kano san has no intention of giving in any further. If I have to choose between those two options, I’d rather be siblings.
“……I’ll go with siblings.”
“Then you know what you have to do, don’t you?”
“All right, Kano san, are you satisfied with this…..?”
“Yeah, I don’t like the fact that you didn’t choose a married couple, but I’ll let you off the hook for now.”
Kano san looked satisfied, but she also looked as if she wanted to say that everything had gone her way. I finally realized that I had been dancing in the palm of Kano san’s hand.
She first presents me with the obviously unacceptable [husband and wife] arrangement and then offers me the comparatively better option of [sister and brother], which I also find difficult to accept.
And when I took a bite out of that, Kano san forced me to call her by her first name, and then she closed down my escape route because I had conceded to her.
Yeah, no matter how you think about it, this is definitely what she was aiming for from the beginning. It seems like I’m no match for Kano san after all.
“Ah, we’ll get off after this.”
“……Yes.”
I was so tired, even though I had not yet attended the open campus. We got off at the bus stop in front of the university and started heading to the open campus reception.
As expected, it is one of the most popular private universities in Japan, so the number of people attending today’s open campus seems to be quite large.
“Hey, isn’t that girl really pretty?”
“I’d love to spend my college life with a girl like that.”
“She’s so beautiful, maybe she’s a model or a celebrity?”
“Well, she’s in Tokyo, so it’s possible.”
As Kano san and I were walking around campus, we overheard a conversation among four guys in school uniforms who were watching us. Kano san, who has changed her appearance from her usual [gal] style to a more innocent one, is still very popular with the boys.
After standing in line for a while and completing the registration process, we moved to the multipurpose hall with our materials. I heard that there was going to be a presentation about the university.
“As I listened to the voices around me, I realized that everyone was coming from all over Japan.”
“Yeah, that’s why when I’m chatting with the girls I’ve become friends with between classes, sometimes I can’t understand what they’re saying.”
“I’m sure that if someone started speaking Tsugaru dialect in front of me, I wouldn’t be able to understand them.”
From the area, you can hear dialects from all over Japan, including Kansai, Kyushu, and Tohoku. Incidentally, since Kano san and I were born and raised in Tokyo and speak standard Japanese, our language does not have an accent.
That is why I have a little bit of a fascination with dialects. I think it would be cool if I could speak in Hiroshima dialect or Kyoto dialect. Well, even if I practiced hard, it would probably still be a fake dialect.
While I was thinking about that, it was time for the open campus to start, and the first program, the university explanation, began.
I had done some research on the university beforehand, so I knew a lot of what to expect, but listening to the explanations of the university staff and seniors made my understanding of the university even deeper.
