“Sorry to keep you waiting, Itsuki san.”
I waited in front of the apartment for a few minutes.
Towa san arrived.
Today was the long-awaited date.
It was a beautiful, calm autumn day, perfect for a date. We were supposed to go out at noon.
For some reason, I was asked to go ahead and wait, so I waited as instructed, but…

She always does things to make me happy.

Teasingly, Towa san takes my hand and starts walking.
“The first date is still to come. It’s just begun.”

The two of us lean against each other. Our strides naturally match, and we walk comfortably, smiling constantly.

“Hey, are you remembering when I asked you out on a date?”
I tease Towa san, who is giggling quietly.
Last week, right after I filled out the marriage registration form, I invited her on our first official date.
It was an unexpected first date for a couple who had just decided to get engaged.
The incongruity of it all seemed to amuse her.
Well, she did accept it gladly, though.
She kept repeating “first date, first date” since earlier, clearly conscious of it.
“Fufu. Pfff.”
“Don’t laugh too much. I was serious about it, you know.”
“I know. I’m sorry. But…it’s just so funny. Fufu.”
“Ugh…”
I’m not really angry, but my sense of shame is being stirred up, so I pretend to be a little sulky.
“I was really happy that you asked me out on a date. Really.”
Then she smiled softly and rubbed her face against my arm as if she were being affectionate.
“I love you because you’re kind and sincere. I love you.”
That alone was enough to completely save the heart of this inadequate boyfriend.
So, I should return the favor to the best girlfriend in the world.
“Me too. I love you, Towa san.”
“Please don’t whisper that in my ear.”
“No way.”
I wrapped my arms around her as she tried to pull away and escape. And I whispered “I love you” repeatedly into her vulnerable ear.
Continuing to express it with words. Continuing to show it through actions.
I believe that is the secret to a lasting relationship.
“Ugh, ugh… If you keep doing that, we won’t be able to go on a date anymore…”
That’s not bad—in fact, it’s quite appealing—but I decided to stop there.
