Yagi Saki

Takuma was in the spotlight on stage.

He looked great in his costume, his singing voice, and his dancing was perfectly cool, and the eager girls were cheering him on.

Kingo came out as a soldier and showed off his not-so-good singing voice and was ridiculed by some.

Then I felt sorry for Kingo when I saw him easily killed by Takuma.

After that incident, I gave up apologizing and thanking Kingo in person, as my father and mother advised.

However, when we passed each other in the hallway, I tried to greet him properly, and he did greet me back.

But his eyes never met mine.

I still love Takuma, we are still together, and we are still trying to become music stars together.

But I was not as blind and calm as before.

The play ended and all the characters lined up to greet each other.

Takuma, who was standing in the center of the stage, was greeted with more applause and cheers, while Kingo, who was on the edge of the stage, had a hard smile on his face.

Suddenly, I felt nauseous.

The crowd was still clapping, but I ran to the bathroom,

I plunged my face into the sink and vomited.

This is…

Anxiety swept over me.

I haven’t had my period recently.

I had to cancel a class party and went home.

“…”

The pregnancy test I bought at the drugstore was positive.

I sent a line to Takuma, but he didn’t call back. Frustrated, I waited, wondering if I should talk to my mother first.

Takuma finally called me four hours later.

“Sorry I’m late ! How was it? Was I cool?”

“Yeah, you were cool. Um~, I think I might be pregnant…”

Takuma choked up for a moment.

“…I see. I’ll check it out at the hospital tomorrow. Think carefully about what to do.”

Takuma’s calm and sincere answer calmed me down a little.

But what should we do?

Will the baby be due in the spring of my senior year of high school? I have to quit high school, right?

I don’t want to do that.

But I don’t want to have an abortion either.

What should I do?

The next day, after changing out of my uniform into plain clothes, Takuma and I went to an OB/GYN a little far away.

Takuma squeezed my hand as I was anxious and nervous.

After examining me and performing tests, the doctor, a calm-looking woman of about 40 years old, looked at me and smiled.

The female doctor looked at me, smiled, and told me clearly.

“Yagi san. You’re in the 10th week of pregnancy. You have a baby on the way. Please consult with the baby’s father and your parents first.”

After that, she explained the general flow of the birth, followed by a brief explanation of the abortion procedure.

I should have been prepared for this, but it was still a shock and I could not remember half of what was said.

I told Takuma, who was waiting for me, and we went to our usual karaoke place to talk alone.

“First of all, I’m sorry. I couldn’t hold it that day without a rubber.”

“No, I should have said no.”

“Thank you. …….I love Saki, and I wanted to marry you sooner or later. So, I want you to have the baby. And, even though it will be a lot sooner than we planned, let’s get married !”

Takuma looked at me with hopeful eyes and gently hugged both my shoulders.

“Marriage ! Um, I’m so happy, but what about high school?”

“Sure, I’ll quit too. I told you that my father is the president of a real estate company, right? I’m supposed to take over as president eventually. So, although it’s a little early, I’m going to join my father’s company and do some menial work.”

My eyes welled up, impressed that Takuma had thought this through and was willing to take such good care of me.

“That’s right… that’s amazing, you made the right decision. Thank you.”

On Saturday morning, Takuma came to see my parents.

I hadn’t told them why, so they were suspicious.

“Father, Mother, I’m sorry. Um, Saki san has a baby with me in her belly. Please acknowledge the baby. And please let me marry Saki san.”

Takuma said in a single breath and bowed his head.

“A-a baby? Are you sure?”

I nodded a big affirmative as both my parents looked at me in panic.

My dad looked down disappointed and ruffled his hair.

“Is it true? Did you go to the hospital?”

My mom was also terribly upset.

“The hospital checked me out and said I was ten weeks along.”

After a long pause, my dad turned his head and sounded exhausted.

“Does getting married mean you’re quitting high school?”

“Yes.”

“Haa~”

At Takuma’s reply, my dad let out a big sigh.

“…What do Matsukubo kun’s parents say?”

“I haven’t told my parents yet.”

“…”

Also numb to my silent parents, Takuma enthusiastically told them that his father owned a company, that he planned to take over the company, and that he would work for the company.

But both dad and mom were still silent.

After a while, my dad finally managed to squeeze out a few words.

“You both want to have the baby.  To get married. You mean you want to quit high school?”

“…Yes.”

Takuma was beginning to get upset that my parents’ approval was so difficult to obtain.

“Is it impossible to have an abortion? It’s not that I’m against marriage. I just think it’s too early…”

Takuma did not respond to my dad’s squeezed out answer.

Both of my parents are teachers at a prefectural high school and know many of my high school teachers.

So it’s not so much about me, but about their own child getting pregnant and dropping out of high school.

I was disappointed in my parents, thinking that they didn’t want me to know.

After another moment of silence, my dad finally looked up and stared at Takuma.

Then he sounded resigned.

“First, I would like to know what your parents think.”

So now we went to see Takuma’s parents.

Takuma was afraid of his father and was much more nervous than when he met my parents.

Takuma’s father was a well-dressed man with a hard look in his eyes, and his mother seemed kind, but she was always looking at his face.

When Takuma told his father that he was expecting a baby, wanted to get married, and wanted to drop out of high school to work for his father’s company, his father shook his head from side to side and let out a loud, loud sigh.

“Takuma, I am beyond disappointed in you. You went out with the daughter of a snack bar worker. You didn’t get into Motomachi High School, the best in the city.

And now you are a high school student who got his girlfriend pregnant, and to top it off, you dropped out of high school so you could join my company.

Why should I take care of such a spoiled, emotionally stunted, and incapable of making calm decisions like you?

If you want to have the baby, have the baby.

If you want to quit high school, do it.

But I will not let you join my company.

You need to get out of this house and find a job yourself.”

Takuma’s mouth was agape at these harsh words.

Takuma’s father looked at him coldly and continued.”

“Even if you drop what you just said, graduate from high school, and graduate from a good college, you will no longer be my successor.”

Takuma silently looked at his mother for help, but she only gently looked away.

“That’s the end of the story. I’ll admit it either way, but you’ll have to think about it.”

His father said coldly and left the room, his footsteps ruffling.

Takuma’s mother followed him, looking worried.

Takuma kept his head down.

“….Takuma, what should we do?”

“…..I’m sorry.”

“……Takuma, what should I do?”

“…..Sorry. Let me think about it one more time. …..I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

I went home alone, feeling miserable.

I thought about it over and over again,

I couldn’t see Takuma and the baby laughing together.

The next day, Takuma called me.

In a muffled voice, he repeated the same words over and over again.

“I’m sorry. Please, I beg you. Please let it go this time. I will take responsibility.”

I hung up the phone without saying a word.
