The next day after school.
As I had expected, Misuta sensei explained about the bazaar during morning homeroom, and our class immediately held a meeting to discuss what we would sell. However, for some strange reason, the atmosphere in the classroom was heavy. Asakura and Sasatsuki were also looking mysterious.
“Hey, Wada. Isn’t the atmosphere bad for the discussion we’re about to have?”
I asked my well-informed friend sitting in front of me in a quiet voice. Then Wada pulled out his smartphone from his pocket and showed me a screen.
“It’s a special article about Hanazono Kanna that was uploaded in the afternoon, but this guy is most likely the cause of this dissonance.”
The article is titled, [Why start a corporation in the third grade of junior high school?] The article carefully describes her brief career history, introduces the products made by the company she founded, and describes her own thoughts on the products. I wondered what could be the cause of the problem,
“The problem is the comment at the end about school events. There, she is asked about the bazaar at the end of the month, and her answer is a bit……”
Wada scratched his head. As I read on, I did indeed come to that section. I don’t think Kanna would say anything strange since she said she was looking forward to this event.
[The company’s products are sold at the annual bazaar held at Amanohashidate Academy in May, right? Will you be selling any of your company’s products there?]
[No, we don’t intend to sell any of our products at the bazaar, including samples. It’s just for fun, after all.]
I was taken aback when I saw a picture of Kanna smiling as she answered. Even though she had been responding perfectly up until now, she developed a bad habit at the very end.
“Well, Hanazono san is the company president. You understand that you have to think about various things like material costs and labor costs, right? Even sample products can’t be made for free. But isn’t it wrong to call the bazaar is just for fun?”
I think Wada has a point. In the comments section of the article, while praising Kanna’s talent and business acumen, there were some negative comments such as, [Isn’t it strange to call a school event a game?]
Wada also noted that many of the classmates were dismayed by the article, and that the teachers were also puzzled by Kanna’s attitude.
“It’s what you call a backlash. Well, it’s a relief at least that she’s not here.”
Wada sighed heavily as he cowered his shoulders. Kanna is not here because she left work early because she had work to do in the afternoon.
It was a blessing in disguise that she was spared from being exposed to this incredibly difficult atmosphere, but on the other hand, it was also true that in order to bring the situation under control, it was better for me to explain my true intentions to her as soon as possible.
I know that Kanna is looking forward to the bazaar. But since it is known that Kanna and I have known each other since childhood, she would think I was covering for her. So, what should I do?
“Well then, let’s begin the class meeting about the bazaar at the end of this month !”
While I was pondering alone, before I knew it, the class president was standing on the podium and the meeting began. The topic of discussion was whether or not we should sell something other than the items we brought from home last night, and if so, what we should sell—.
“I don’t have to do anything else, just bring the appropriate things from home like before, right?”
“I don’t have time and I don’t have money. Even if we tried to make something and sell it, we’d still end up in the red.”
“I wish Hanazono san had offered a sample of her company’s products. Well, it’s useless to ask someone who says school event is just for fun.”
Regardless of gender, everyone complains rather than expresses their opinions, so the meeting is not the time to hold a meeting. Moreover, from what I heard, it seemed like everyone was counting on the free samples from Kanna’s company. The ladder was suddenly kicked and everyone felt a mixture of anger and disappointment.
“You’ll never catch a raccoon if you don’t count the chickens before they come home.”
“They’re too selfish, I tell you.”
I can hear Sasazuki and Asakura murmuring among the noise. The two of them who listened to the conversation must have guessed that there was a hidden real intention behind the words written in the article. That being said, I don’t have any contact with Kanna within the school to bring this up.
“Well then, everyone will bring their own unwanted items from their homes for the bazaar ! That’s it for today !”
The classroom is filled with the color of discouragement. With everyone’s motivation visibly waning, the class president, unable to bear the silence and the waste of time any longer, announces the dismissal with a twitchy face.
The students are leaving the classroom, bags in hand. It has been a month and a half since high school life began. I felt like I could already hear the sound of a large crack running through the class.
“Hey, hey…..at this rate, is it going to be okay?”
I was bewildered by the awkward atmosphere, which I had never experienced in my school life in the countryside. We are far from being united.
“Well, I’m sure things will work out somehow. I’d say it’s all you can do.”
Wada said in a somewhat resigned tone and left the classroom to go to club activities. Does it mean that things will turn out the way they did in this case, and that the flames will subside and the situation will end without incident? Or will it continue, or will it get worse and turn out to be a bad thing?
“……Seriously, I don’t know what to do.”
But bad omens often turn out to be right.
I received a message from Asakura along with an angry stamp telling me that she would give me a massage today, so I took a leisurely walk around the school to kill time until club activities were over.
“I wonder what I should do with the items from the bazaar…”
For Jinpei, who has come to Tokyo, there is nothing that he can offer as a bazaar item. However, I can’t have my parents send me anything.
When I came up with an idea that it would be better to move my body than to stay still, I remembered what my teacher Katsuragi sensei had told me and put it into practice, but it didn’t have much of an effect.
“Now that I think about it… Katsuragi sensei said she’s the alumni of this school. Should I talk to her about it later?”
This was the only conclusion I came to after walking around for three hours. I was so pathetic, no matter how much I had never experienced anything like this before.
Before I knew it, the sun had set and it was time for club activities to end.
“Asakura must be angry…….”
I hurried back to the classroom with my head in my hands, wondering where I was going and what I was doing, and hoping that Asakura had not gone home. I must collect my bag and head to the club room—
[Don’t you think Hanazono san is getting carried away?]
[Isn’t it because she’s being pampered as a company resident?]
“—Hm?”
As I put my hand on the door, I could hear the girls chatting from the classroom.
