In order not to worry Kohime, I did not tell her about the unfair treatment I was receiving at school because of Sumika’s lies.
Partly because I did not want to worry her, but also because I might have been able to end the situation before she heard about it, so there was no need to tell her about Sumika’s lie.
However, my shallow thinking was quickly dispelled, and the situation rapidly worsened, and the rumor about me finally leaped over the grade level and spread to the entire school.
I’ve heard that rumors spread at the speed of light, but in my experience, the speed at which rumors spread seems to be faster than light.
There are people who trust me, like Kohime, Kento and Hanai, but my mentality has completely died because I have made enemies of so many people.
As if to push me over the edge, the lies spread by Junka seemed to have reached the ears of not only the students but also the teachers, and I was summoned to the staff room by my homeroom teacher, Kimura Kanae.
“Yauta, are you aware of the rumors about you that are spreading in the school?”
I was asked that question with a mysterious look on my face, and I answered honestly without pretending not to know.
“…Yes. I’m aware of all of them.”
“I see. So let me ask you anyway. Is the rumor true? Or is it a hoax?”
If I answered Kimura sensei’s question honestly, Kimura sensei would probably believe Sumika, who has always had good behavior, and not me.
But all I could do now was to answer the question honestly.
“…You may not believe it, but that rumor is just a hoax.”
Even though I denied it myself, when I put myself in Sensei’s shoes, I couldn’t help but feel miserable.
There was no way the teacher would easily believe the words of someone who was usually quiet and had never had much conversation with any of the teachers.
There is a saying that there is no smoke without fire, so no matter how hard I try, no one will believe my story.
If that happened, I would be suspended, or in the worst case, expelled from school—.
“I see. I understand. Then, for the time being, just go on with your school life as before.”
“……Eh, you’re going to trust me?”
I opened my mouth with the same unexpected turn of events from Kimura sensei.
“You can’t treat a mere rumor as truth. And besides, any sane adult can judge what kind of people Yauta and Yoshino are and whether there is any truth to either of their words.”
“Kimura sensei……”
I didn’t expect Kimura sensei to be such a decent adult.
There are probably some adults who will take Sumika’s rumors at face value and insult me with dirty words without thinking.
I was becoming distrustful of people because of the false rumors that were spread by Sumika and the sharp stares I was getting from the entire school, but there are decent people out there.
Lately, I think I may be blessed with surprisingly good people.
“But you know, if this were true, you would probably be suspended, or worse, expelled from school”
“……Yes.”
“Whether this is true or false, please understand that and act accordingly in the future.”
“…..I understand.”
“Sensei !”
Just as the conversation between Kimura sensei and I was about to end, the door to the staff room opened and Kento and Hanai burst in.
“…Eh, Kento and Hanai? Why are you coming here?”
“Kimura sensei ! Please don’t expel Eita !”
“Yes, that’s right. Eita may be a bit of a goofball, and he’s a hopeless human being, but he’s not a bad guy !”
It seems that the two were eavesdropping on the conversation between me and Kimura sensei, but they were either having trouble hearing what was being said, or they thought I was going to be expelled.
And they seem to be trying to persuade Kimura sensei not to do so.
It bothers me that Hanai’s words are still harsh, but I’m sure that’s because she’s hiding her embarrassment.
“Y-you guys, I’m not being expelled.”
[ [……Eh?] ]
Kento and Hanai looked at each other.
“Eh, didn’t you just say about being expelled from school or something……”
“Ah, so it’s not expulsion, maybe a suspension !?”
“No, not even suspension.”
“Is that so?”
“I just told Yauta that if this was true, he could be suspended or even expelled from school at worst. Yauta will continue to attend school normally.”
[ [….Thank goodness.] ]
The two of them sat down on the ground after saying that.
“You’re too eager. You could have asked me about it later, you know?”
“No, because it would be absolutely strange for Eita to be punished in any way, and I think we have to stop it.”
“Well….thank you.”
“…..You have good friends.”
“……Yes.”
I have really good friends.
If it weren’t for Kento, Hanai, and Kohime, I would already be completely out of school.
I have nothing but gratitude to everyone.
…However, that’s why I can’t cause any more trouble.
Especially to Kento and Hanai, they know I’m being treated unfairly at the same school and they’re trying to cheer me up and solve my problems.
Of course I’m grateful and reassured, but in the worst case scenario, the spark could fly back to them.
I couldn’t afford any more trouble.
So I decided on a plan.
“Sensei, I have a proposal.”
“What is it?”
“Summer vacation starts this weekend, right?”
“Yeah. That’s right.”
“I don’t want to cause any more trouble or be the topic of conversation, so I will voluntarily not go to school for a week until summer vacation begins.”
[ [……Huh?] ]
I thought about it as much as I could and made the decision that I thought was the best.
