Episode 8 – Don’t drop it again

Before entering the fountain, Kanna had tucked the phone in her hand into her skirt pocket. The fact that it was missing—

“—Did you drop it when you fell down hard?”

Kanna stared at the fountain with a pale face. This is exactly what happens when a mummy catcher becomes a mummy. And that phone has a strap on it.

“I-I have to go get it ! That’s the precious strap Jinpei kun gave me !”

“I’ll go look for it. You stay here and be quiet.”

I say it in a strong tone as I take off my leather shoes and socks, roll up the hem of my pants, and step into the fountain. I can feel my body temperature dropping rapidly. It seems better to hurry.

The janitor, perhaps in full-blown disbelief at the sight of the bizarre behavior occurring in rapid succession, began sneaking around, talking quietly and moving away in groups of three.

“Wait, Jinpei kun !?”

Amidst all this, Kanna raised a bewildered voice. Has she already forgotten what she did just a few minutes ago?

“It’s okay. I remember the approximate location where Kanna fell. I’ll get it right away, so please wait there quietly.”

“…..Isn’t that too much?”

“Hahaha. I’m nothing like you. I don’t let my guard down until the end like some people do.”

“Geez ! You idiot, Jinpei kun ! Please don’t say anything mean !”

I reach the target point with the voice of my angry childhood friend behind me. Fortunately, the water was clear and clean, so I was able to find her phone quickly. The water is only knee-deep, so retrieving it is easy.

I let out a sigh of relief and grabbed the phone. Then, I slowly returned, taking great care not to make the same mistake as Kanna.

“Here, your phone. It’s submerged in water and won’t turn on, so you’ll have to send it in for repair or buy a new one. Do you have a backup?”

I wiped my feet as I sat on the edge and returned the phone, soaking wet as did its owner.

“…..Thank you. My phone is broken, but it’s okay. As long as the strap is safe, that’s all that matters.”

“I see. Then don’t drop it again, okay?”

“Yes,……I’ll be careful.”

Kanna smiles at that, but her shoulders are slumped. After scratching my head, I put on my shoes and took my childhood friend’s hand and started walking.

“J-Jinpei kun !? Where are you going? Aren’t you going home !?”

Suddenly, Kanna is in a mild panic after having her hand held by me. I’m sure she’s not that surprised since she held my hand on her own in the classroom.

“You can’t go home wet, right? Come over to my house.”

“Jeez, Jinpei kun ! What do you mean by that ! I think there is an order to things !”

Kanna goes jittery and flails at my suggestion. She’s even blushing up to her ears, but she doesn’t think I’m up to something bad, does she?

“I mean it as it is. My house is close to here. Why don’t you dry off your uniform, take a shower, and soak in the bathtub to warm up your cold body?”

It was awkward to bring her into my home on the day we met again, but I couldn’t just let her go home like this. And we can talk about the old days at the coffee shop, which is what I was planning to do.

“I see……so that’s what you meant. Then why didn’t you just tell me first?”

“Well, if Kanna says she doesn’t like it, I won’t force her. It’s scary to come to the house of a man who lives alone, isn’t it?”

“I’m not worried about that, so it’s okay. I’m sorry, Jinpei kun. I think I spoke too soon. In that case, I’ll take your word for it !”

“…My ears are getting older. What were you thinking?”

“T-that’s a secret ! It’s not really something I can say out loud here…what are you making me say !?”

I didn’t say anything. Kanna just blew herself up on her own. I’ll just get punched in the face again if I say anything, so I keep my mouth shut.

“So much for joking. I’ve always believed and know that Jinpei kun would never do anything that I wouldn’t like. I’m not at all afraid of going to your house.”

“……Thanks for that.”

If you say that with a serious look in your eyes, I’ll be embarrassed, so please don’t do it.

“Well then, let’s go check on Jinpei kun, who has moved to Tokyo and started living on his own, to see his home !”

“What are you going to look for in my house?”

“Of course an erotic book. It’s my duty as a childhood friend to make sure Jinpei kun’s sexual habits aren’t distorted !”

I have no intention of letting you do that, and to begin with, there are no books of that kind at all, so it’s useless to search for them.

“……What if by any chance I was distorted?”

Let’s go, Kanna says cheerfully, raising her fist. However, there was no way I could not notice that it was just an air of energy. I headed home alongside Kanna, wondering what was going to happen.
