I had an older sister.

My sister was a so-called genius who could do anything.

She was smart from elementary school, succeeded in passing the junior high school entrance exam, and entered the best university in Japan.

She also entered one of the best universities in Japan and studied abroad.

As the younger sister of such an older sister, I had no place in the family.

No matter how many good marks I got in tests, they were only good marks “for me” and not much compared to my sister.

Once my father saw the genius that was my sister, he never praised me for being an ordinary person.

My father and sister are both capable of doing everything on their own, so they don’t know how I feel.

I never had such brilliant glances in my eyes.

My mother was as quiet as a doll, just standing still beside my father.

And yet, her eyes were full of confidence.

“Why are you staring like that?”

I asked her once, not expecting a response.

But unusually, my mother answered.

“…I have to protect my treasure.”

When I saw her say those words while looking at my sister, I regretted not asking her.

Because I only realized that to my mother, my sister was her treasure, and not me.

When I was 10 years old, my sister became pregnant.

She was still in college.

My father, as expected, was angry at first at this, but he soon warmed up to her because the man she was with was a lawyer.

What kind of lawyer would get a college student pregnant.

Some time later, my sister gave birth and my nephew, Miharu kun.

Since my sister was still a college student, she and her husband came to live at our house.

That was a mistake.

Soon after I turned 16, my brother-in-law attacked me.

I resisted desperately and hit him on the head with an ashtray on his desk.

I ran away from there and locked myself in my room with the door locked.

Naturally, there was a problem, and I had to talk to my father, my sister, and my brother-in-law in the living room that night.

My sister naturally took my brother-in-law’s side.

So I desperately told my father.

I felt like I was about to be attacked, so I had no choice.

I asked him to get rid of the man.

I thought my father would believe me.

“Slap.”

As I was talking, I felt a pain on my left cheek.

My father, who had slapped me, had a look of anger on his face and said.

“Enough ! There is no way he would do that ! You can’t even study, and you even lie to me, you’ve failed me !”

My father did not believe me.

He said I had failed him, but I don’t remember being expected to do so.

From that day on, I never set foot in the living room again.

When I turned 20, my sister and her husband stayed at home.

My father and brother-in-law hit it off and ended up living with them all the time.

My father and the others often ate together.

At night, when I come home from school, I hear bright voices coming from the living room.

Every time I hear this, I think.

This house is broken.

No one sees me, not my sister who married a man who would attack his own sister, not my father who does not trust his daughter and believes others who come after her, not my mother who does nothing.

Unusually, no one was home that day.

I was off from college and my part-time job, and I stepped into the living room for the first time since the day of the college entrance exam.

Even at that time, my father just said he would pay for it and didn’t even ask me what college I was applying to.

There was a boy alone in the living room playing video games.

The only child in the house was my sister’s son, Miharu kun.

When I saw my nephew for the first time in a while, I didn’t feel anything.

However, Mharu kun was different. He stared at me as I opened the refrigerator and rummaged through it.

“There’s nothing in particular…..”

With nothing in particular to eat, I ignored the stares and went back to my room.

The living room felt like someone else’s home after all these years.

There was nothing special to do in my room, so I was just studying when I noticed that the door was faintly open.

I look and see Miharu kun staring at me through the crack.

Distracted, I sigh and talk to him.

“What do you want?”

I intensify my tone.

I’d be grateful if he’d run away with this.

I thought so, but then, without a doubt, Miharu kun came into the room.

“Who are you?”

He asked with pure eyes.

“……Didn’t your mother tell you not to talk to me?”

“….She told me.”

“If so, get out of here.”

I told him that, but for some reason he didn’t want to leave.

“……Your mother will be angry with you.”

I tried to be as gentle as possible, but there was no response.

When I was thinking about what was going on, Miharu kun said to me.

“…..Onee san, I feel sorry for you.”

“Excuse me?”

I reacted to the unexpected words.

“Because ! Mom, Dad, and Grandpa ignored you, and they’re all horrible !”

He looked me in the eye and said those words.

For the first time, I felt like I was meeting someone’s eyes.

I was stunned by the suddenness of it all, and then Miharu kun put some snacks on my desk.

“The one my mom was hiding ! I’ll give them to you ! Don’t tell anyone !”

He smiles as he says so.

(This boy is watching me…)

I thought so.

My father, sister, and mother do not have expectations of me, do not believe in me, and did not look at me.

But this boy, Miharu kun, is the only one who sees me as me.

He recognizes my existence.

(I want this boy…….)

I can’t help but want to make the boy in front of me my own.

But that would be the same as destroying this family.

(But it’s already broken, and if it’s broken anyway…..)

When that thought passed, I had no reason to stop it.

“See you ! Onee san.”

I grabbed Miharu kun’s arm as she was leaving the room.

“Onee san?”

“……Miharu kun, let’s play with your sister.”

“With Onee san?”

“Yeah. I know what’s more fun than playing games. So, you know?”

On this day, I felt as if I had been reborn.
