After our part-time job at the beach house was over, everyone except Makoto and I was exhausted and fell asleep on the train on the way home.
We were tired too, but not so much that we fell asleep, and we were swaying on the train, looking at the scenery outside without talking.
“The summer vacation went by so fast, didn’t it?”
It was Makoto who broke the silence that had lasted for a while.
“It’s not like we did much. If we had gone on a trip or something, it would have been more emotional.”
“We don’t have that kind of money.”
“That’s true.”
My part-time job is basically a savings fund, and Makoto doesn’t have a lot of money in his pocket.
The money on hand is at most the pocket money of an average family.
“The second semester will be busy, right? With the school festival and the sports festival.”
“We’ll have parent-teacher conferences right after the start of school.”
“Oh, yeah, that’s right. It’s a strange time of year for our school.”
As Makoto said, Kohshin’s parent-teacher conferences are held in the first week after the summer vacation.
The school places a lot of emphasis on dialogue with the parents and also takes into account their lives during the summer vacation.
“Ken, are you gonna have your dad come in?”
“No, probably Hitomi san. Ayaka and I are gonna have them the same day.”
“Is she gonna be okay?”
“It’s only the first year, so there won’t be much to talk about.”
There will probably be some talk about career path, but at most I will be asked whether I want to go to higher education or get a job.
Even Hitomi san can handle this.
If my father comes, there could be a fight.
“What about Miyu’s mother? Will you ever meet her?”
Since I have told Makoto about the situation to a touch, he gets worried.
I’m grateful for his concern.
“I’ll work it out. Like making sure the dates don’t conflict with each other, and I’ll keep in touch with Hananoi.”
“Well, let me know if you need anything.”
“Yeah.”
Makoto is a really good guy.
I wonder how many friends I will have in my lifetime who will treat me with this level of sincerity.
“Changing the subject, but how are Ken and Miyu getting along right now?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean exactly as it is. You’re not brother and sister anymore, just a classmate, right? I’m just wondering about your distance.”
“Just friends, I guess. I don’t wanna go too deep, but I don’t wanna cut ties with her.”
I’m sure Makoto, who knew me in middle school when I was going through a rough patch, would be concerned about me and Hananoi.
There is nothing special about us.
I’m just treating her as a friend now.
“I see. Well, it’s okay if you’re comfortable.”
Then there is silence again.
“….It’s so hot.”
“Summer’s almost over.”
I blink, talking to myself like that.
Summer vacation is over and a new semester is about to begin.
In the sky that I can see from the train, the big airplane clouds are starting to disappear.

“I was just a kid back then who didn’t know any better.”
While Kenshiro and his friends are enjoying their summer vacation, a young man and a good-natured man are talking in a coffee shop.
“So I rejected that kid. I got scared. I thought it would be my fault.”
“That’s a natural feeling. I’ve heard your story, and it’s not your fault, in my opinion.”
“…That’s what everyone says. You are not a bad person. You are a victim !”
“Objectively speaking, that’s right. It’s not your fault.”
“…..But if I don’t take responsibility, I don’t think it’s right to put the blame on her alone.”
The young man looks at the good man and says.
“I’m not going to run away from my responsibility anymore.”
He continues with his prepared declaration.
“I won’t make excuses for being a child. I will face my aunt properly. As his father.”
Junya took these words to heart.
