“Hey, Rintaro. You can hear me, right?”

What I could feel in the palm of my hand was the sound of her heart pounding like a drum.

And the soft sensation of her hand enveloping mine.

I, Oosaki Rintaro, lay pinned to the bed in my room, looking up at the girl standing before me.

Her white skin flushed with heat, her golden hair shimmering softly. Blue eyes reminiscent of the deep sea.

Though she bore a resemblance to her former self, she didn’t quite match the girl in my memories.

Elis Wiegert.

My childhood friend from back when I used to live in Germany.

That same Elis was pressing my wrist—which she had grabbed—against her chest.

“Elis, wait a second! This is… well, this is a bad idea, isn’t it!?”

“It’s not a bad idea.”

In stark contrast to my trembling voice, Elis spoke calmly.

I couldn’t make head or tail of the emotions behind her words.

(If this keeps up, I’m going to lose my mind…!)

The moment I realized it, I knew this was bad.

The heat radiating through my palm, her breath—everything was blocking my escape route.

“Rintaro, you’re trying to run away again. But I won’t let you get away this time.”

“Wait, what do you mean ‘run away’!? And ‘again’…”

The more I tensed my arm, the harder Ellis pressed my hand against her chest.

“I worked so hard. I learned Japanese. I studied everything Rintaro would like—clothes, hairstyles, mannerisms. So you’d never disappear from my life again—”

“Elis, you…”

Elis’s fingers dug into my wrist.

It didn’t hurt.

But I could feel her determination not to let me break free.

“I’m going to etch this into you. So that Rintaro will never forget me again. I’ll teach you everything about me—the sound of my heartbeat, the warmth of my body…”

(How did it come to this?)

As I look up at Ellis, smiling eerily, I’m reminded of my own weakness in the past.

I guess I made a mistake. That mistake warped Ellis, who used to be so shy and withdrawn.

This is a story about paying the price for a past I chose to leave unresolved.
